A monopolist cannot solve such losses by raising its prices. It is conceivable that a monopolist may have no point on the demand curve at which it will turn a profit. Under such circumstances, the monopolist has to simply accept the loss or exit the industry, as raising the price to cover costs will result in a reduction of revenue.
b) a monopolist cannot charge any price it wants. For any product -- even in a monopoly -- there is a point of maximum profit for any point on the demand curve. Above that point, demand falls as consumers switch to a substitute, ration their consumer or simply refuse to consume the product. At this point, a marginal increase in revenue will result in a marginal reduction in profit. For the monopolist, increasing prices simply will not result in increased profits; neither will lowering them. If at this point the…...

I tried many things to find my aptitude before discovering my enjoyment and proficiency with economics. In Korea, I was first drawn to the game of golf as a profession. I enjoyed the game very much and had great passion for it, but my skill never quite reached the level I desired. I also became quite proficient at playing the saxophone, and even tried the skill of acting for a time, but though I enjoyed these things, they never seemed to be exactly my aptitude. At first, I considered myself a failure for trying so many things without truly succeeding at any of them. The same was true of my college experience in Korea, as I was denied admission to universities several times. But it was only during my experience of these failures that I found my true aptitude with economics in reading newspapers about financial information for my…...

Although the assignment of specific theory in understanding the leader's behavior clearly demonstrates overlap in theory -- indicating that the leader may employ various degrees of leadership theory in order to achieve the best possible outcomes -- application of concepts such as influence and power also demonstrate a wide breath of applicability and utilization. For instance, my current leader utilizes different forms of power in order to achieve influence with different groups of followers and subordinates. In dealing with his bosses, my boss employs expert power. My boss makes a strong case for change or improvement based on his understanding of his department and the needs of his employees. However, in addressing leaders from other departments, my boss employs both expert and legitimate power. If resources or tools are needed from a different department, my boss makes the request based on a clear, legitimate need and his experience with his…...

trudged through the mud, which caked up around the soles of my new shoes. The uphill climb wasn't strenuous on the legs, but the afternoon sun zapped every last ounce of my already waning energy; I hadn't eaten a thing all day. James, a realtor with whom I worked regularly at Capital Pacific Homes, told me, "You have got to see this place! It'll blow you away!" As James wasn't normally prone to histrionics, I came with him to visit one of the new homes we had recently placed on the market. It figures, I thought, that we would choose one of the most remote spots in the sun- and saguaro-drenched valley to erect another Green Home.
I had only been working as Marketing Coordinator with Capital Pacific for a few months when I realized how strong the market demand was for ecologically sound, sustainable building practices. Especially in places…...
