Harvard Admission Qs as I
Pages: 4 Words: 1188

2. What have you learned from a mistake?

Of course, even as I speak with great pride of my accomplishments, I can quite easily recall some of my more humbling moments. Without question, and especially in the complex and fast-paced world of global finance, one is bound to make a mistake.

And quite often, if one is to truly learn a lesson, the mistake might very well have been fairly huge and costly. Certainly mine was.

While working at Deutsche Bank, I in advertently placed an incorrect order when buying shares for a client. Naturally, when the client encountered the mistake in his account, he became very angry and expressed this anger to his Relationship Manager at the bank. When I learned of the incident, I was horrified of course. But I immediately approached the Manager and explained that it was my error which had triggered the client's anger. I called the client…...

Therefore, many of those whose homes are most at risk are victims of their need to live beyond their realistic financial means, mainly for the sake of living up to a social image and impressing their neighbors.
In principle, the issue pointed out by Einstein applies equally to "overly ambitious" first home buyers in the half-million dollar range as to Wall Street debt traders for whom that same amount represents the price of water craft more than primary residences. Obviously, the comparison was not something completely foreign to me before, but the words of Einstein impressed the idea on me in a more meaningful way nevertheless, especially in combination with some of his other observations, such as:

The aim (of education) must be the training of independently acting and thinking individuals who, however, can see in the service to the community their highest life achievement.... Never regard your study as a…...

Harvard Professor of History and Economics David
Pages: 5 Words: 1642

Harvard Professor of History and Economics David S. Landes states in his book that that no has the simple answer as to why some nations are very rich and some are very poor today, he nevertheless argues that the West has been way ahead of the East in progress and success. He categorically points to England as the first country in world history to develop and this happened in the 18th century. Because of this, he writes that Europe (or England) shows how a nation can succeed. The book is a direct negation of the concept of multiculturalism in declaring that even the Chinese and Islamic civilizations' great scientific and technological advancements could not continue to progress as Europe has. He attests to a European miracle in earlier centuries.
Landex compares the development of the West and the East to show how the West won and has led. He uses…...

Diabetes Harvard Citation Studies Conducted Over Decades
Pages: 4 Words: 1255

Diabetes
(Harvard Citation)

Studies conducted over decades have concluded that there is a significant link between diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. For instance, the most common form of diabetes is type 2 diabetes, which involves both the impairment in insulin resistance and the defective secretion of insulin by the pancreas. The development of diabetes often comes with a number of cardiovascular complications including "coronary heart disease (CDC), stroke, peripheral arterial disease, nephropathy, retinopathy, and possibly neuropathy and cardiomyopathy." (Grundy 1999)

Specifically both diabetes type 1 and type 2 are considered to be risk factors for atherosclerotic coronary heart disease. "Moreover, myocardial ischemeal due to coronary atherosclerosis commonly occurs without symptoms in patients with diabetes." (Grundy 1999) In other words, patients with diabetes are more likely to be stricken with congestive heart failure. But it is not only the risk of heart failure that diabetes sufferers are at risk from, another risk of heart…...

Confidential Information Case Study
(Harvard Citation)

Confidential information generally consists of non-public information about people or institutions that if it were to be disclosed, could be expected to place either the person or the institution at risk. These risks could be criminal in nature, but also could be civil liability, financial standing, employability, reputation or privacy. ("601" 2010) In most businesses, employees are strictly regulated as to what information can be disclosed about other employees. However, in many businesses, people are routinely exposed to confidential information that could possibly cause harm and must weigh the various ethical concerns involved. These include the problems involved over their agreeing not to disclose such information when they were hired, as well as the possible harm disclosing the information could cause to the company, or any of it's employees. But this must be weighed against the possible harm that not disclosing such information could pose to…...

Analysis of the Harvard case the Treadway Tire Company: Job Dissatisfaction and High Turnover at the Lima Tire Plant 2189

An analysis of the dilemma facing the Treadway Tire Company, particularly at its Lima plant in Ohio, is one that reveals many aspects and problematics of contemporary human resource management. This case is in essence a model for many of the themes and issues facing modern management and leadership in large-scale industry.

The Treadway Tire's plant in Lima has been confronted with high levels of job dissatisfaction, which is accompanied by high turnover rates, particularly among there line foremen at the company. This is partly due to the position of the foremen as they are uncomfortably situated between management and the unions. However, central to the problems experienced at this plant…...

Accuracy of Harvard Implicit Bias Test
Pages: 1 Words: 351

Review of Harvard Implicit Bias Association TestThe Harvard Implicit Bias Association Test is a valuable tool for nurses and other healthcare providers to learn more about their own implicit bias. This test helps individuals to identify how they may subconsciously associate certain characteristics, qualities, or feelings with certain groups of people. For example, in the fat versus thin test I took, it identified that I have a stronger autonomic response to thin people, and that I associated good words with thin people versus fat people. Because nurses work with a variety of people from different backgrounds, recognizing our own implicit biases can help us provide better care. The Harvard Implicit Bias Association Test provides insight into how we may be influenced by our unconscious beliefs. By learning about our own biases, we can strive to be more aware of our language and behavior, and to ensure all patients receive the…...

Happiness and the Experience Machine Harvard Philosopher
Pages: 5 Words: 1634

Happiness" and "The Experience Machine"
Harvard philosopher Rober Nozick made an interesting observation about happiness. Suppose one was to reflect on two different lives that contain the same amount of happiness. One life begins at a low point, and continues to get better with each passing moment. On the other hand, the second life begins on a high note, and continues to move downward towards an unhappy ending. The eternal question is, of course, which one would be preferable? Like the majority of people, I would choose the life that begins at a low point and slopes upward. Nozick believed that this says something fundamental about the human relationship with happiness. Humans, by nature, are seeking something more than the total happiness in their lives. Nozick refers to this as the "narrative direction" of happiness, and finds that we as humans seek structure in our positive experiences. Rather than hope…...

Harvard Business Case Study on Primedic
Pages: 2 Words: 657

Primedic? Why has this venture attracted so much interest from Endeavor and IGNIA?
When Decanini founded Primedic in 2002, about half of the population of Mexico was uninsured. Decanini's vision for Primedic was to improve access to healthcare insurance for the population of Mexico, a lofty goal. The initial plan was to offer Primedic services to employees of corporations and therefore Primedic would be working directly with enterprises. However, the IGNIA investment helped Decanini and his colleagues achieve the more ambitious goal of offering insurance to the vast numbers of individuals who did not have the types of stable jobs with companies that provide insurance coverage to their employees. The basic Primedic model was to get the lowest rung of the Mexican socio-economic ladder into preventative care so that health outcomes could be improved. Therefore, Primedic is a company with a grand vision, making it attractive on the level of…...

Ethics and the Law

Harvard college's "oncomouse," which is a mouse that has been genetically engineered to make it more susceptible to cancer, and thus of more use in research, could be patented under Canadian patent law. The Patent Examiner refused to grant the patent, stating that higher life forms were not inventions under the applicable law because they were not compositions of matter. The majority opinion upheld the Patent Examiner's decision. Justice Binnie dissented to the majority's opinion. Justice Bastarache wrote the majority opinion.
The majority opinion, authored by Justice Bastarache represents the court's actual decision. Majority opinions represent the decision of the court. In some cases, there is no actual majority opinion because of partial dissents and concurrences, but that is not applicable in this case. The majority felt that Parliament did not intend for every conceivable subject matter to be patentable, and points to the fact that Parliament wrote an exhaustive…...

Corporate Approach to Solutions Innovation
Pages: 9 Words: 3055

Henry W. Chesbrough uses this exact notion of "permeable boundary," when he gives his definition of open innovation: "In the open innovation model a company commercialises both its own ideas as well as innovations from other firms and seeks ways to bring its in house ideas to market by deploying pathways outside its current business. Note that the boundary between the company and its surrounding environment is porous, enabling innovations to move more easily between the two." (MIT Sloan Management Review: The era of open innovation, Henry W. Chesbrough) Having this in mind Procter and Gamble created their "Connect and Develop" innovation model.
In order for "Connect and Develop" to become what Procter and Gamble envisioned the company realized it was of the outmost important not to use time and valuable resources on ideas that may be interesting at first but later on prove to have no concrete, specific application.…...

Impacting a Manager's Role Social
Pages: 4 Words: 1238

Another expample, as Dahlin (2007) notes, WorldCom was in the heart of one of the largest accounting scandals in history. Add to this the Wal-Mart effect of business in general, with companies having to compete with Wal-Mart's low costs, made possible partially due to their low wages, failure to pay overtime, nonexistent benefits, and resistance to unionization, and a ripple effect has been cast on the waters, causing other companies to follow suit, in an effort to be competitive.
Changing Society Equals a Changing Demand for Corporate Social esponsibility:

Today's changing society has increased the demand for corporate social responsibility. The decades of ethical abuse, coupled with the recent financial soul shattering scandals, has called for businesses to renew their social contract with society (Basu & Palazzo, 2008). Society now demands that corporations take responsibility for their interactions with the world.

A generation ago, most people didn't think tobacco was a dangerous…...

Strategic Planning for Training Companies
Pages: 55 Words: 16101

" Of these respondents, over 50% of them stated that they lack a disaster recovery plan (Anthes, 1998). However, most of the problems stem from the lack of communication at the corporate level. (Hawkins, et al., 2000).
Business Continuity Plans (BCP) and other forms of strategic planning are no longer a luxury, but a must-have factor and an important element of any organisation's risk management system. Organisations are increasingly dependent upon it systems and infrastructure and eventually subjected to many risks, so business is inherently risky. How long can your organisation afford system downtime? How long does it take to recover a disaster; and, what does it cost? These kinds of questions are the ones that have to be addressed for BCPs. Also important, however, is using strategic planning to look toward the future and determine where a business wants to be at a specific point, so that plans to work…...

Management of Change Balagon Julia
Pages: 5 Words: 1404

In my opinion, valuable organizational change is a process. It is nothing that comes from one day to the other. It requires the combined efforts of the organization as a whole: Skilled managers and the commitment of an organization's workforce alike.
Discussion of the paper's results: What are the key findings? What does it add to the body of knowledge?

The key findings of the paper are threefold.

First, the current management of organizational change tends to be reactive in its response to the pace of change that has never been greater than today. Second, successful management of change within organizations is a highly required skill. Third, further research into the nature of change management needs to be conducted and a new and pragmatic framework for change management is needed as a critical success factor for the management of change. It adds to the body of knowledge, that managerial skills alone will…...

This research paper is designed to look at the expansion that Hangzhou Yongheng hopes to make into markets in the Ukraine and how that expansion will work. This essay examines the company in question and the products that it already ship. The markets where the product is currently available (such as Western European countries) will also be looked at to determine how well Hangzhou has done expanding its base from the Chinese market in…...

How do I conduct research for an essay on the corporate culture of a fortune 500 company?
Words: 309

Harvard Business Review has some of the best in-depth reviews of individual companies and may offer you some of the information that you seek about an individual Fortune 500 company’s culture.  You could start by looking at individual aspects of what is considered part of successful corporate culture and then look for articles or essays about those different facets of corporate culture, which could be a spring-board for an in-depth analysis.

If we were looking at a Fortune 500 company and wanted to find a source of an in-depth look at its corporate culture, we would search for....

Need suggestions for a subject for essay topics: strategic decision making, strategy, leadership, management control systems, entrepreneurship or organization change?
Words: 356

A paper that focuses on topics like strategic decision making, strategy, leadership, management control systems, entrepreneurship, or organization changes can take two approaches.  You can thoroughly explain one of the concepts, for example describing that strategic decision making is a method of business planning that looks at long-term goals.  The other approach is to do some sort of case study looking specifically at events to determine how one of those topics either impacted or was impacted by a company’s decision-making process.  So, the first thing you need to do is decide what type of paper....

What is the best way to start an essay about what you have learned about race, ethnicity, and immigration?
Words: 370

It is always tricky to answer a question about the best way to approach any type of writing.  The best approach for one person might not be the best approach for another person.  This is especially true if you are writing an essay about your personal perspective, especially on topics that could be divisive such as race, ethnicity, and immigration. In fact, any discourse about bias has the potential to become emotional because people experience a wide range of feelings when asked to confront their own personal bias and, no matter how....

why were wealthy women only able to access education?
Words: 614

Historical Context and Social Norms

Throughout much of history, education was considered a privileged pursuit reserved primarily for men. This was due to several factors rooted in prevailing social norms and societal expectations.

Gender Roles: Traditional gender roles assigned domestic and nurturing responsibilities to women, while men were expected to be the breadwinners and decision-makers. Education was seen as a necessary preparation for men's future roles in business, politics, and other public spheres.
Economic Factors: In many societies, women had limited economic opportunities and were expected to rely on their husbands or other male relatives for financial support. Education was therefore....
