Dr Seuss and World War
Pages: 6 Words: 1774

Also, the wariness of industrial America and how their greed will affect everyone in the long-term. Theodor Seuss Geisel had many cartoons back in the 1940's that many in the general public found highly offensive. However, many people also saw them for what they were; a tool for enlightenment of human kind. Many of Dr. Seuss' written and illustrated books made over 65 years ago, continue to sell today. They not only sell in print form, but as movies, as well. As with any successful author, everyone will have varying opinions on Dr. Seuss' work. However, most agree that he truly was an American Icon and his writings impacted people in many ways. His career was a success and he should have no regrets about how powerful his work was for people across the globe.

Dr Seuss the Lorax
Pages: 5 Words: 1550

Lorax
Probably the most ideological and political children's stories of Theodore Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss), The Lorax is a story of industrial capitalism gone insane until it destroys the entire natural environment. In fact, capitalism as symbolized by the greedy and corrupt Once-ler, is the villain of the story while hero is the Lorax, who speaks for the forest, skies, water, plants and animals that the system is destroying. Like capitalism in the 18th and 19th Centuries, the Once-ler started off small scale, chopping down one Truffula tree and selling the products in a little shop, but eventually his greed becomes an obsession and he builds superhighways and a factory employing 100,000 workers. For the Once-ler, all of this is progress, and he ignores the repeated warnings of the Lorax that the entire environment is dying, and that the birds and fish are becoming extinct. Once-ler only cares about his profits…...

Children's Book
Critical Reflection

It is difficult to write a children's book because there are so many different things to think about before it can be accomplished. The style has to be interesting enough to keep the interest of the audience, no matter whether that is adults or children, but if a book does not flow correctly a child will sense it and be bored. Also, there is the matter of what age level the book is for. The selected subject matter has to be appropriate for the age of the targeted audience and it has to be presented in such a way that it does not lose the young reader. A young child will also want interesting illustrations that can hold interest.

The best advice may be to research others who have been successful with a certain age group nor genre and see what they did. Pat Mora, a successful children's book…...

Yertle the Turtle This Story Is Set
Pages: 2 Words: 578

Yertle the Turtle" This story is set in a pond dominated by turtles and that is presumably organized in a hierarchical way with king Yertle in charge of the community of turtles. Yertle stands on a rock that represents its throne and the other turtles are 'forced' to act in accordance with its wishes.
Yertle is an eponymous character and one of the central characters in the story while Mack, the other central character, is the turtle at the bottom of the pile and the individual who decides to overthrow Yertle's authority.

The main theme in the story is related to how an individual can lose everything if he or she keeps trying to get more power.

The conflict involves Yertle's tendency to want more and Mack's determination to do something about it.

The exposition shows Yertle as a turtle who is not satisfied with its position. The rising action takes place when…...

Children's Literature Sass's the Cat
Pages: 7 Words: 2352

In addition, the human pronoun "her" is used to refer to the mother penguin, while "it" would have been a more appropriate choice if the author wanted to reinforce the penguins' animal aspects (BBC 3, 8). hile the author does use the term "chick" throughout the book, mixing it with the human-like terms further allow the child reader to grasp the non-fiction elements of the book while still remaining interested and emotionally involved in the story. Evoking sadness in the reader, a photograph shows the mother walking away from her baby. Through the use of these words and illustrations, the fact that the penguins are animals living in a natural home is emphasized, while children are still engaged through the mild human-like qualities that are ascribed to the animals (BBC 3-4).
Thus, a comparison of the personification used in The Cat and the Hat and in Baby Penguins yields great…...

Good afternoon Judge Jacobs, how is everybody doing? Today, we have a case that needs to be defended. ecently, my client, Donna Mills, used a book called "Cat in the Hat" by Dr. Seuss. Today, I stand to support the book. The reason for this defense is simple. The children's book is being accused of having not developing phonemic awareness. As we know, Phonemic awareness is important since it is critical to reading and spelling accomplishment. Children who cannot decide and operate the sounds inside spoken words have trouble distinguishing and learning the vital print=sound association that is critical to quick reading and spelling achievement. Phonological awareness is essential for learning to read any alphabetic writing system. And plenty of research shows that trouble with phoneme awareness and other phonological proficiencies are a predictor of poor reading and spelling growth.

It is important…...

I was initially hesitant about going to see what I perceived as a "children's'" movie until two friends suggested that this was a movie with many layers of meaning. I did a bit of research on it, and found that it looked interesting. The Lorax is a computer-animated 3-D musical based on Dr. Seuss' book with the same name. It is the fourth time in recent years that a Seuss book has been turned into a major motion picture. The movie has a number of well-known Hollywood stars using their vocal talents: Danny DeVito as the Lorax; Zac Efron as Ted Wiggins; Taylor Swift as Audrey; and Betty White as Ted's Grandmother.

The Lorax was written in 1971 and is really Seuss' testament…...

Ethical Standards and Power

intersectionality, power, and privilege, it is impossible not to wonder if it is human nature to seek, gain, and preserve power at the expense of others and lose all concept of the consequences. As an optimist, I believe that we can all change. In The Sneeches and Other Stories, Dr. Seuss also offers some hope for humanity, showing that it is possible to recognize the essential equality of all people and the importance of actively changing our own behavior to create meaningful changes in society. What Dr. Seuss seems to suggest, and what Johnson talks about in the Introduction and first few sections of Privilege, Power, and Difference, is that it is often up to a few individuals to make the changes that matter.
Of course, it really helps to be made aware of the issues first. I think if we take away one thing from this class, it is…...

Jon Benet Ramsey Case Study

Witnesses reported the noticeable odor of decay was present and dried mucous on one of her nostrils. The child was dressed in a light colored long-sleeved turtleneck and light-colored pants (similar to pajama bottoms). Her distraught father placed her on the floor by the front door. A white cord was tightly embedded around her neck similar to the string around her wrist. On her neck at the base of her throat was a red circular mark about the size of a quarter (World Law Direct Forums web site).
Based on her own experience Det. Arndt believed the child was dead and that she had been dead for some time. John amsey told Det. Black No More

Black No More
There is a book I used to read when I was younger by Dr. Seuss called The Sneetches. The main plot is about two groups of Sneetches: "The Star-Bell Sneetches," who "had bellies with stars," and "the Plain-Belly Sneetches" who "had none (stars) upon thars."

Naturally, those with the stars believed that they were much better than those without. They would walk around bragging and looking down on everyone else, "We're the best kind of Sneetch on the beaches.' With their snoots in the air, they would sniff and they'd snort, 'We'll have nothing to do with the Plain-Belly sort!'" Such a situation is prime for Sylvester McMonkey McBean, who is always looking for a way to make some quick money. He sets up a machine that adds stars to the individuals without them. Of course, the ones with stars then want theirs removed. McBean is pleased to…...

Introduction to Sociology: The Lorax

The aspects of capitalism that I personally appreciate are the ideas of a free market and the idea that anybody can bring their goods to the market place. I appreciate the fact that in a capitalistic society, there is the opportunity for people being able to compete in the market with products, letting consumers choose from among the lot that which they think is best for the cost. What I find worrisome is that capitalism can lend itself to unrestrained greed and complete disregard for everything that is external to oneself, as Dr. Seuss shows in The Lorax (jefonty, 2013). The Lorax teaches the zero-sum game paying Once-ler that “unless” the latter “cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” In other words, in order for capitalism to be applied safely in society, individuals and businesses in the marketplace…...

Unfortunately, most young adult books have hit rock bottom, dealing with death, abuse, divorce, sexuality and all the other topics that these youth are bombarded with day after day. It is recognized that youths need to deal with the problems that are facing them, and living in a fantasy world is not helpful. However, do they ever have a time to "chill" as they say it? However, the Twilight Vampire Series is really not the answer to this. It has, what is said, little "redeeming value."

It's difficult deciding on a best YA book and not going back to the classics. The best bet is finding a book that offers imagination, education and entertainment. There are few, but Rebecca Stead's When You Reach Me comes close. It combines the best elements of recent classics, such as A Wrinkle in Time as well as fun TV game shows like the $20,000 Pyramid, and a story about a girl, Miranda, whose structured world becomes a little more interesting. Miranda's bestest friend Sal stops talking to her he is beat up by Marcus. Marcus then challenges Miranda with arguments about her favorite book, A Wrinkle in Time, and finds flaws in L'Engle's time-travel narrative. Next, Miranda starts receiving notes from someone who seems to know the future. The book's earlier setting in 1980 gets away from all the heavy themes of today and back into "easier" life with Mom on the $20,000 Pyramid.

This is a book that can be enjoyed by readers and nonreaders alike and can be utilized in a variety of different ways for book reports. The teen and pre-teen readers can rely on many different visual arts, TV/film and drama to convey what they have learned from the book. It is also a great book for smaller groups of students to work together for a team project. Forget the horrible Twilight and instead focus on multithematic books like When You Reach Me.

I am not sure what I expected about my check-up. I suppose I thought that the new relationship I had the OBGYN because of my pregnancy would continue on as a special relationship. I was wrong. My visit was, once again, the sterile, medical kind, and not the kind that I had with him while I was pregnant. My OBGYN performed the post surgical exam, and then spoke with me briefly.

"You're healthy," he said, "and I would recommend beginning again, as soon as you're ready, to get pregnant again. If that's what you." Then he was gone, and the nurse came in with a prescription.

"This, she said, is a prescription for a mild pain killer for cramping. Really, it's just a prescription strength aspirin." Then she looked at me and added, "I know what you're going through."
