Community Leadership
Kolsow, D.. Chapter 8:
The chapter begins by pointing out that the development of community leadership skills is an integrated, and often complicated, process. The second component of this is the acknowledgement that leadership is a learned skill rather than an inherent one obtained by "birthright." The effective involvement of local leaders in their communities leads to the effective functioning of such communities, which makes a focus on developing such leadership essential.
One particular approach to leadership the author considers as highly effective in terms of building and sustaining communities is by means of the task force. In addition to enthusiasm for the task at hand, particular advantages of the task force approach include: a specific time frame for concentrated activity, collaborative group work, and creating a network of influence. The author also mentions specific concerns that relate to task forces, including population growth, workforce planning, and local education improvement, among…...

Community Leadership
Written documents on Leadership in political, public, governmental, social, industrial and community organization is something that began in the early 1900s and is quite broad in scope and content. Various dimensions of the topic have been explored such as perspectives of leadership, leadership sources and roots, traits in leadership, functions of leaders and how the environment impacts roles in leadership. This chapter looks at various literatures in the field with emphasis being on theories and studies on leadership within the human service and community service organizations. The paper is a personal reflection on some of the issues discussed in the chapter.
There are several leadership theoretical approaches that have developed and evolved over the years. These include traits approach whose main focus was the personal attributes of a leader with the assumption that leaders are born and not made. Studies that followed reveled that leadership is a dynamic concept that…...

Community Leadership
Excerpts from a Community Organizer's Tale (Mike Miller, 2009)
The article by Miller is a classic and practical example of the daily challenges that organizations dealing with the community face on a day-to-day basis. It highlights the various challenges that are not necessarily universal but peculiar to each society and that may change due to the prevailing environmental, social and political realities of the time. The writer puts to the fore the unpredictable manner in which the community may react to the activities or approaches of the organizers or the organization. For instance Miller highlights the case of Mayor Alioto who was quite uncreditable hence an elite that jeopardized the operations of the organization. Initially the organizer expected him to offer resistance to the accusations and requests made to him, he never did and indeed agreed to work with the organization and visit the Mission District. On the material day…...

Community Leadership
Peter Hall's "Symbolism, itual, and the Deep Structure of Communities" provides an in-depth analysis of the forming of communities in the United States. The author considers the beginnings of communities from the outset of the country's inception, and discusses the fact how early on communities were centered around religious and cultural values -- especially with the pilgrims and their puritan lifestyles. What is key about this early version of communities in the country is that they were based around economic, religious, and political factors; in the south, for instance, there was less structured community in the form of churches and schools than there were in the North due to the autonomy afforded by plantation lifestyles.
The notion of community was threatened country-wide with the newfound freedom of the victory in the evolutionary War, in which the south represented a liberal vision whereas most federalists were gathered in the north. The…...

Community leadership is very important, and one of the best ways to lead a community is through getting grants to develop and improve that community. Urban neighborhoods are coming back in many parts of the country, and they are doing that, in part, through grants (von Hoffman, 2003). In order to get a grant, though, an agency or organization has to know exactly who to apply to, what should be put into the application, and what type of criteria has to be met (Browning, 2009). Without strong knowledge of what is needed for a grant application, there is little likelihood that application will be approved. One also has to know where to find grants that are legitimate. Many of these can be found through official state and federal government websites, as those are the best places to start looking (Browning, 2009). They are also the best places to read requirements,…...

enterprise, before creating a plan to help a community, it is essential that an assessment is conducted to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the population and also the available resources to structure the action plan (Vincent 133). Conducting assessments works to raise awareness about the issues at stake in the public eye given the information such assessments bring to light. The assessment, using both quantitative and qualitative information, can help define the parameters of the community and its needs. Data collection methods include researching and reading previous studies of the community; literally taking a 'windshield' or observational tour of the area to record initial impressions; taking photographs; conducting interviews of residents; holding community meetings; and facilitating focus groups. A more quantitative approach is to distribute questionnaires whose results can be tallied. The ideal is to gain a full portrait of the physical, social, and 'human' infrastructure in terms…...
With funding resources being so scarce where do you think dollars are best spent in developing communities—funding physical development or human development? Give reasons to support your reasoning. Where do you think community change happens, at the community level or at the governmental level?
Although the ideal situation in a developing community is to have funding to improve both physical and human infrastructure, when a choice must be made, investing in human capital is more vital. A good example of this is the developing world nation of India. A highly educated populace that speaks English and has an abundance of technical capabilities has attracted foreign investment to the nation. When there is a pool of trained individuals, outside organizations are more inclined to see opportunities for themselves; they are also more likely to offer aid, given that there is a greater likelihood such aid will not be wasted. Conversely, an investment…...
Leadership Oforganizational Change
Leadership Change
One of the most well documented efforts towards change in the United States is the transition from the original 13 colonies to the current inception of the United States of America. What is highly significant about this effort towards transformation is the fact that it adhered to a number of principles delineated in Hickman obinson's text, Leading Changes in Multiple Contexts. In fact, this particular example is preeminent among others for the simple fact that it is simultaneously demonstrative of the five contextual influences on leading change: organizational, community, political, social and global. Although formal leadership of this effort would not fully emerge until the transformation was complete and George Washington was appointed President, his involvement with the other Founding Fathers in the First and Second Continental Congresses and the efforts of other revolutionary groups such as the Sons of Liberty provided the essential leadership necessary to…...

Servant Leadership
In the rapidly changing corporate world of today, we need a dramatic change in the way businesses are conducted and organizations are managed. In the past, organizations were merely concerned with making profits and achieving targets and it was the job of the leader to ensure that all tasks are completed on time. As for as the real goal of the organizations is concerned, nothing has changed. However we notice a dramatic difference in the way organizations seek to increase revenues and achieve their ultimate goal of profit-maximization. This difference is the result of changes that we have encountered in leadership style over the years.

Crime Prevention PlanIntroductionThe city of Cincinnati, OH, is seeing an increase of violent crime and gun shootings in the Over-the-hine (OT) community. Since 2000, OT has been a major source of frustration for the city: it is on the northern side of the citys business district where residences and small business owners dwell together in the citys oldest neighborhood. For decades OT housed the citys poorest residents, but since 2000 the city has poured billions into fixing up the community, painting buildings and offering incentives to business owners. The goal has been to create new parks, new businesses, revitalize residences and tap into the communitys historical strengths as a midway point in the city between the urban business district on the river and the uptown college area. However, last year saw the city set a record number of homicides at 94, which represented a 30% increase from 2019, many of…...

Community
Etymology of a "Community"u
Community is a group of people that share similar values and interests, work towards similar goals and support each other. There are many different types or groups of people that qualify as a "community." A community does not have to be a particular size to qualify as a "community" although generally most communities consist of a group of people that is roughly a dozen or more (Smith, 2001). The neighborhood most people live in and work in is generally considered a community.
Smith (2001) quotes Hoggett (1997) in stating that since the late 19th century, the "use of the term community has remained to some extent associated with the hope and the wish of reviving once more the closer, warmer, more harmonious type of bonds between people vaguely attributed to past ages" (p. 5). Most people consider the term community a "positive" term, meaning they associate the word…...

Leadership
Sustainability in Leadership
Current global occurrences have posed a great challenge to the continued existence of living things on earth. At this stage in the history of man, humanity is struggling with a lot of challenges; and these challenges are not restricted to region or race. Problems associated with climate change, increased rate of poverty, inconsistent democracy, and lack of justice and fairness in society are common to all nations. At this critical moment, there becomes a vacuum to be filled with urgency by leaders whose sole desire and purpose is to salvage the earth from total destruction. The world needs leaders who possess strategies to effectively combat these challenges and lead their followers into lifestyles that are self-sustaining. Leaders who could bring about this much needed sustainability to our environments are regarded as Sustainability Leaders.

Two of the most pressing issues in corporate leadership today include gender equality and labor rights. In "Women See Slow Progress in Leadership," Gay (2013) cites numerous empirical studies showing that the glass ceiling remains nearly impenetrable at the highest levels of management. The report cites the work-life balance ideal as the most common reason offered for why many women are either opting out of the CEO lifestyle, or are not considered ready or willing to handle the challenges and pressures of senior leadership.

My organization is Miami-Dade Transit, for which I am a bus operator. The Transit system is an independent operating entity within the government of Miami-Dade County. Leadership of this company is typically appointed, and this was the case of the current Director, Ysela Llort. She was posted to the position at Transit in February 2012, after a career spanning many different units within the county, including Public Works, Aviation and Seaport, as well as an earlier role at Transit. Her background is diverse enough that she not only can effectively manage the transit system for one of the most highly-populated counties in the country but also that she can perform a role as liaison with the county, the government entity that funds and provides oversight for the Transit division. This paper will examine the leadership style of Ms. Llort, in the context of my experiences working there.

Leadership and Management Training Guide:
Leadership and management are terms that have been used interchangeably as many people assume that they are similar despite of their fundamental differences. The main reason attributed to this trend is the fact that these concepts must go hand in hand because they are complementary and linked together. Actually, attempts to separate leadership and management always contribute to several problems more than it solves. However, much has been written regarding the importance and difference between leadership and management. The effectiveness of managers and leadership abilities in a management team basically depends on their understanding of the differences between the two.
Differences in Leadership and Management:
Effective leaders and managers have become necessary for the successful operation of teams, organizations, and groups. This is because of the similarities and differences that exist between leadership and management for effective functioning of each. Leadership is basically described as the process with…...
