A double-bind situation is when there are two conflicting messages provided, and the information in one message negates the information in the other message. No matter what response the person makes, he or she will be "wrong" because answering one message successfully would mean a failure to answer the other message successfully. The term was first used in the 1950s by Gregory Bateson, an anthropologist.
