A paper that focuses on topics like strategic decision making, strategy, leadership, management control systems, entrepreneurship, or organization changes can take two approaches. You can thoroughly explain one of the concepts, for example describing that strategic decision making is a method of business planning that looks at long-term goals. The other approach is to do some sort of case study looking specifically at events to determine how one of those topics either impacted or was impacted by a company’s decision-making process. So, the first thing you need to do is decide what type of paper you want to write.
Going with the assumption that you are studying business, we really like the idea of a case study. Case studies are a great way to see how the theories you are learning in business or management classes work out when applied to real-life business scenarios. Harvard Business Review is known for publishing some really in-depth case studies for businesses that are going to familiar to you and to your professor. Starting with one of those cases would be a great springboard for an amazing paper, and you could determine which topics to cover based on the specific information you find in those case studies.
Some of the best Harvard Business Review case studies are: The Army Crew Team, Fabritek 1992, ATH Technologies, Lincoln Electric Company, Pal’s Sudden Service, The United States Air Force: Chaos in 99th Reconnaissance Squadron, and Warren E. Buffet. If you are not sure how to use a case study in a paper, I highly suggest looking over some of our completed sample essays on those topics. They do a great job showing how to synthesize the topics you have been learning in your coursework with the specifics in a case study.
