While the idea of border security is always innately political, it is even more so right now. Combined with immigration policy, border security helps shape what our country looks like. More importantly, immigration policy helps shape the future electorate, which some people believe will have a dramatic impact on the country’s political future. So, the first thing you should consider is how deeply you want to delve into politics, motivations, and partisan differences. If you do, then you could choose a niche thesis statement focusing on those issues. In addition, you could have a compelling hook if you lean into partisan ideas. You could even use a hook that is frequently repeated, but factually untrue, as your hook, and then use facts to challenge it in your paper.

Some thesis ideas for border security include:

The Trump Administration’s border security policies helped exacerbate the COVID-19 crisis at the start of the pandemic.

The Trump Administration’s border security policies helped reduce the impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

The DREAM act encourages illegal activity by rewarding parents who bring their children here without following the proper immigration channels.

The DREAM act discourages illegal activity by allowing people who were brought to the US as children to step outside of the shadow society and take their place as citizens.

Undocumented immigrants who serve in the U.S. military and receive an honorable or a medical discharge should receive their citizenship when discharged.

Immigrants, legal or illegal, should not be permitted to serve in the U.S. military.

There should be no special rules for immigrants seeking asylum in the United States and they should be treated like other immigrants.

Immigrants seeking asylum in the United States from countries with documented histories of civil rights abuses should not be treated like criminals coming into the country illegally.
