Many unions and their representation plans were inferior because they did not provide employees with enough benefit for what the employees had to give up. Union dues were often expensive, and employees hoped to get protection and better working conditions in exchange for those dues. However, unions had to make too many compromises in their representation plans to really give employees a high level of benefit. Some unions were better than others, though, about making sure employees got what they really needed. Other unions compromised too much, and the employees paid the price for that.
