Counseling is guided by ethical theory because all counselors have to uphold ethical standards. The principles, values, and morals that also guide counseling are a bit more flexible. While there are legal and moral codes to which counselors must agree to adhere, they have flexibility beyond that. Counselors seek to help their patients through talk therapy, and though teaching them techniques that they can use to improve their lives. The ways in which they do these things have to remain more and ethical, or they would be doing a huge disservice to their patients.
