One of the great things about writing a position paper using the Bible to provide scriptural support is that the Bible is such a large document, full of internal inconsistencies, which means it can be used to support almost any position.  This is especially true if you are looking at scripture in isolation, rather than viewing it as an excerpt from a larger book or as part of a cohesive theme.  In fact, you might be surprised to discover that the Bible has text that can be used to argue against most of the ideas that we think of as being Biblical, though some of those arguments may be more difficult to sustain than others.  To see what we mean, head over to a searchable or topical Bible.  You can find many of them on the internet, but we really like Open Bible’s Topical Bible

Using a topical Bible, you can enter search terms for concept or ideas. The topical Bible will then provide relevant scripture for that concept or idea.  Different topical Bibles have different coverage, so if you do not find relevant scripture at one, you may want to visit others.  Keep in mind that the quoted phrase or scripture is going to appear out-of-context.  For the strongest argument, you are going to want to go to the surrounding scripture and read it as well.

For example, one of the controversies in modern society is whether wearing a mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is showing a lack of faith in God.  If you search for “illness” in a topical Bible, you will find plenty of Scripture that you could use to support the idea that God is the only protection people need against illness.  However, you could also search for scriptural support of God helping those who work for help and also for people helping their neighbors to support an opposing argument.
