Words That Can Hurt The Feelings Of Someone With A Mental Health Issue Term Paper

Personality Disorders

High Self-Esteem refers to a person's positive view of themselves. This is generally healthy and is associated with resilience and a balanced perspective of one's strengths and weaknesses. Narcissism is a personality trait characterized by grandiosity, a need for admiration, and lack of empathy. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a mental disorder where individuals have an inflated sense of their importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others.

For example, Tony Stark (Iron Man) is often shown as a high-functioning exhibitionist type of narcissist. His displays of wealth, charisma, and intellectual prowess are signature elements of his personality and success, but according to Keith Campbell's three types of narcissism, Tony Stark's personality is indicative of a person who is outwardly successful but struggles with personal relationships, which is true for Stark.

The causes of NPD include cognitive causes, which could be due to maladaptive schemas about oneself and others. Emotionally, a history of excessive pampering or excessive criticism can lead to NPD. Environmentally, various societal and cultural factors may contribute to narcissism. For instance, societal emphasis on individualism, success, and superficial qualities can foster narcissistic tendencies.

The diagnostic features of NPD fall on a spectrum because narcissistic traits exist in many people to varying degrees. It is basically a question of severity and impact on functioning that determines whether these traits constitute a disorder.

Considering programmatic themes, such as self-care, understanding personality disorders can help individuals recognize their own unhealthy patterns and seek help. Also, dealing with someone who has NPD requires a lot of self-care as interactions can be draining.

In terms of social justice, acknowledging personality disorders as legitimate mental health issues can drive initiatives to provide necessary resources and challenge societal stigma associated with mental health. Also, understanding personality disorders from an emotional intelligence perspective increases empathy and improves communication. Plus, knowledge about personality disorders is essential in fields like psychology, social work, and human resources and can help professionals manage interpersonal dynamics better. From an ethics perspective, diagnosing and treating personality disorders ethically requires respect for the person's dignity, informed consent, and avoiding any harm or stigmatization.
