Youngsters with greater exposure to such images depict increased likelihood to start smoking (Surgoen General, 2017).
Youngsters who see instances of smoking within movies depict increased likelihood to adopt the habit themselves. The likelihood of developing this habit among the most highly exposed group is two times that of the least exposed group. While smoking images within movies have undergone a drop in the last ten years, the year 2010 saw about 33 percent of highest-grossing kids’ movies (rated PG, G, or PG-13), depicting smoking. Furthermore, youngsters identify with the members of their friend circle who are considered social leaders and might attempt to emulate them. Consequently, youngsters exposed to sibling- or peer- smoking depict increased likelihood of developing the habit of smoking (Surgoen General, 2017).

Youngsters are largely drawn to cigars, particularly the ones that are cigarette-sized. Twenty percent of high school boys smoke them. Further, cigar consumption seems to grow in other groups as well. Youngsters widely utilize more than one tobacco product, such as cigars, smokeless tobacco and cigarettes. If the progress made in decreasing tobacco consumption is in line with that made from 1997 to 2003, the world will have three million fewer youngsters addicted to smoking (Surgoen General, 2017).
