She demonstrated a positive response to the communication. Another key strength of the interaction is that Helen had a positive action that she could take in response to our conversation. It gave Helen specific actions to help her focus on positive events. One of he key weakness of communication was that although, I was able to redirect Helen from her grief, the underlying issues surrounding the grief were not discussed. Helen's Alzheimer's is a contributing factor in this conversation. It was easy to get her to share long-term memories, but difficult to get her to share feelings about the present. The second major weakness in the communication is that the communication did not address issues that result from Helen's Alzheimer's disease. However, I tended to be "lost" in the moment and failed to follow up with a definite strategy that addresses the patient's specific needs. In the future, I may use a checklist to remind myself of these critical points of the session. The most important lesson that I learned is that therapeutic conversation takes practice in order to become more proficient. However, the rewards in the end provide a sense of satisfaction for the patient and the nurse.
