In the Old Testament, Moses emerges as an unlikely leader of the captive Hebrews. Raised by the Egyptians like a son, he finds that he is actually a Hebrew and his relationship with the God of the Hebrews grows so that he is chosen to send a message to Pharaoh that God wants the Hebrews to be freed. Moses was an ethical leader from the beginning who practiced both ethical leadership and transformational leadership skills to bring the Hebrews to the Promised Land. He killed a slave master for cruelly whipping a Hebrew, fled, met an angel of God, and returned to his true people to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt and through the desert for 40 years.Moses was given up by his mother as an infant because the Egyptian ruler feared that the Israelites were becoming too powerful and would ally themselves with Egypt’s enemy. So the order was given that all Israelite children should be killed. Moses was discovered by the royal Egyptian family and raised as an Egyptian. When he killed an Egyptian, he became a fugitive but he also become at the time a true son of God and listened to God through the angel in the burning bush. Moses delivered the Hebrews from slavery and then led the Israelites for many years and gave to them their first set of laws known as the 10 Commandments.

Moses was also not a very good public speaker and he asked God to choose another leader, but God wanted Moses to serve as his messenger to Pharaoh and to assist Moses, God gave him Aaron to be what essentially amounted to his public relations man. Aaron was a much better public speaker than Moses, but Moses was truly the leader, who had the vision and the ethical leadership needed to provide the Israelites with support, guidance, and a clearly defined ethical framework (Ben-Hur & Jonsen, 2012).
The first main issue Moses faced was having to witness the Israelites being cruelly subjected to slavery by the Egyptians. Moses was a man of integrity and honesty and when he killed the Egyptian in order to defend the Hebrew, he showed his principle and valor. He fled to save his life, but he returned because he obeyed his God, who demanded that he return to tell Pharaoh that God wanted the Hebrews to be freed. Moses demonstrated his honor again and did as he was instructed.

In dealing with Pharaoh, however, he was dealing with a man who did not want to listen or negotiate or heed the warnings that Moses delivered. Even after the plagues, it took the Angel of Death to visit the house of the Pharaoh before the order to free the Hebrews was given. And even then, the…
