When students are bullied, their self-esteem suffers. They are prevented from being welcomed into the dominant culture and may also become hostile to the learning process itself. To avoid bullying, students need to build on a reserve of self-confidence. Associating with other English language learners is a good way to build a reserve of self-confidence. However, my job is to teach students how to best get across points in English. This means advocating for the students and helping them to feel like their culture is equal to that of the dominant culture. Like RObert Lake does in "An Indian Father's Plea," I will ask that my students value their native language(s) as well as English.
