Teaching Culture: Strategies for Building Culture in Education Institutions Building relationships and an overall culture is important in any organization both to ensure that the organization itself operates in an efficient and effective manner, and to make sure that each individual within that organization is achieving their full potential for advancement and growth. This is no different in educational institutions, where interpersonal relationships and overall culture can have a large and direct impact on the quality of education provided and the development of educators in their profession. The following paragraphs will outline a particular example of a strategy used to build relationships and strengthen culture in an educational institution as experienced first-hand by the author, detailing the theoretical underpinnings of the strategy and the particulars of its implementation.

Building an Effective Culture in Educational Settings

One of the most essential aspects of culture in any education setting is building relationships not only amongst colleagues, but also between students and their families -- the community that the institution serves (Kalyanpur & Harry, 1999; Huber & Harkavy, 2007). This can create dialogue not only with family members but also with colleagues regarding learning initiatives and goals, building a more integrated culture directly focused on education (Huber & Harkavy, 2007).
Implementing this strategy can come with varying degrees of ease and complexity depending on the age level being taught and other considerations, but it is possible in any environment and was found to be extremely effective in an elementary school (second grade) classroom (Kalyanpur & Harry, 1999; Huber & Harkavy, 2007). In this particular instance, a lesson plan involving family histories and also incorporating a study of American history was given that required familial interviews and encouraged short written responses by different family members. As this project was quite extensive and resulted in a large visual and textual display, it also provided an opportunity for an external classroom display, sparking conversation with other students as well as other educators.
