Science and Technology

a) If the community of men and women who are called scientists accepts the scientific test of a scientific theory, does that mean that anything is acceptable as long as enough of the right people agree with it?

The answer of whether scientific tests and theories are true or false depends on various issues. Scientists are always inventing new ways to support their arguments and theories. First, scientists must prove that the test and theories they present conforms are practical in the world. If the tests show any inconsistency, then the theory under test becomes invalid. Therefore, for people to accept any scientific tests and theories, the ideas must show consistency. Testing scientific theories is a continuous process, which takes time before approval. It, therefore, means that not everything that scientists accept as scientific tests becomes acceptable. The theories must pass through feasible tests before approval.

B.Does that mean there is no such thing as scientific truth?

The response to this question is again intricate. Few people are ineligible to making decisions about scientific knowledge. Numerous factors influence their decisions, such as, cultural, religious, political and historical aspects. This causes misunderstanding between scientific truth and scientific opinion. There are enough reasons to doubt the reliability of scientific theories. This is far from inventiveness or any theological beliefs, but rather it involves fundamental process of science itself. The scientific method is heuristic, which always advances towards models with strong explanations.

c. How, if at all, does science differ from politics, art, or religion, in that case?

Science, politics, art, and religion shares similarities in their existence as aspects that explain humanity needs. They describe the world and the entire universe in various perspectives. Science, relies on scientific methods, and scientists try to discover the world and explain why things happens they way they happen. Arts describe the efforts applied by man in describing the world by using intangible concepts, such as, sentiments. As well, man uses religion to transform the universal pursuits that explain both the science and art. However, the three disciplines differ in various aspects.

There are some that describe the world using information, logic and tests (the way the world is), and there are others that use sentiments and faith (the way people view the world). People have different opinions based on the significance of each discipline. During the industrial revolution, that is, in the early 19th century, arts proved impossible without institutions, cultural practices, politics and reasoning. Therefore, the three disciplines support each other in various angles. Science, politics, art, or religion may seem different in various aspects; however, their great similarity is that each of the discipline forms the basis of man's efforts to seek the truth.

2. Technological Revolutions

a) Do you agree with the assertion that we are now living in a third great technological transformation called the Knowledge Revolution.

The Industrial Revolution changed the human life during the 18th and early 19th century. The developed nations took a great initiative in advancing the technology. However, there were numerous challenges that affected the revolution. Multiple technological advances replaced human efforts with mechanical work. In essence, Industrial revolution marked a turning point for human life. Similarly, we are now living in a third great technological transformation called the Knowledge Revolution. This is because of the tremendous transformations evidenced on Industrial transformation, for instance, introduction of computers.
