Narrative Analysis

This paper is designed to provide a narrative analysis of the Family Nurse Practitioner program and how I have adapted the program outcomes to my professional expertise within the field of healthcare. This paper will also identify how these objectives were reached by providing evidence from my graduate experiences. In addition, this narrative analysis will provide insights as to how I met these objections and how these program outcomes have improved my expertise as a nurse. Emphasis will be placed on program outcomes and how they align with those of the American Association of Colleges of Nurses along with the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Core Competencies. Finally, the narrative analysis will conclude with an explanation of how each of these elements coalesce together to provide a complete and comprehensive learning experience.

FNP Program Outcomes

To begin, the program outcomes looks to prepare nurses will high-quality, comprehensive, and patient-centered learning experience. One of the most impactful program outcomes was that of PO3, which is centered around lifelong personal and professional growth. The program outcome also looks to establish an appreciation of cultural diversity. This program outcome was very essential to my overall learning experience as it provided a strong sense of accountable for learning objectives throughout life. The healthcare and nursing professions are unique in that regulations and technological change is rampant. Here, the emergence of sophisticate technologies such Telehealth and Telemedicine require a very distinct and broad array of skills to effectively leverage properly. Likewise, nurses must possess the ability to continually learn these processes in an effort to provide high quality of care to patients and other key stakeholder groups within the community. This becomes very critical as technology continues to disrupt the traditional business models of healthcare institutions around the world. Within America alone, major infrastructure changes are currently underway as the COVID-19 pandemic exposed many of the weaknesses within the system. These system flaws not only hindered patient access to care, but they also inhibited the overall quality of outcomes for patients looking for high-quality service. These changes have both been political and technological in nature. For the nurse to properly assimilate these changes into their own practice, program outcome three related to life long learning and growth will become imperative (Adams, 2014).

Another element embedded with program outcome 3 that improve my psychomotor and cognitive domains was that of an appreciation for cultural diversity. Research has shown that the overall nursing profession has undergone significantly improvements related to diversity. These improves are a result of the passing of the Affordable Care Act providing health insurance access to millions of Americans who otherwise would not have purchased coverage. In addition, the overall industry is experiencing rapid growth as a result of an older population, strong healthcare demand, and rising healthcare care costs. New entrants within the industry are often more reflective of the population with African Americans and Hispanic Americans accounting for 23% of new industry employees. As a result, it is important to have a strong appreciation for cultural diversity to help continue these positive trends that are occurring within the industry overall.

Program outcome two and program outcome five also helped to improve my cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains. First program outcome two focuses heavily on creating a caring environment and achieving quality health outcomes. As referenced within the introduction, quality healthcare outcomes have not manifested in society commensurate with the expenditures required to achieve them. Both the qualitative and quantitivate elements of healthcare assessment validate these points. For one, nearly 18% of Americas GDP or $6.2 Trillion dollars have been spent on healthcare expenditures. Again, the evidence shows that I have met this requirement through my completion of NR 505 advanced research and evidence-based practice assignment. As noted above this assignment provided the student with a deeper understanding of evidence-based practice in nursing compared to research methodology. I also demonstrated my completion of this competency through the Week 6 quality improvement paper part 2 assignment. Here, I used evidence-based practice to provide quality improvement solutions within the healthcare system overall.

My leadership in real-world healthcare settings has also enabled me to satisfy both competency four and competency five. Competency four is related to the ability to apply investigative skills to help improve healthcare outcomes. Competency five is related to the students ability to integrate technology into their ability to improve healthcare outcomes. Both were accomplished through my ability to implement and instruct others on new electronic health record practices within an acute care setting. I was also able to satisfy these competencies through the NR 599 informatics assgnment along with the NR 501 assignment. Both required use of technology to properly improve health solutions and outcomes for individual patients and customers. In addition, the real-world experience I gained from the acute care setting has also enabled me to meet competencies related to healthcare delivery.

Finally the competencies related to independent practice and ethics have been demonstrated through my course work and real-world experience within the healthcare industry. Although difficult to demonstrate, I have acted ethical in my dealings in both an academic and professional setting. I have also leveraged my learning throughout the course to learn a variety of ethical frameworks in which to apply to real world circumstances.
