Summary In “Ethical Leadership, Religion, and Personal Development in the Context of Global Crisis,” Sandu Frunza considers the role of religious communities in mitigating the type of extremism that leads to violence and global crises. According to the author, religious leaders need to play a stronger role and have a stronger voice in outlining to their communities why extremism is incompatible with faith. Even though Frunza is treating a subject that can easily become mired in nebulous ideas, the author does a good job of bridging spirituality and ethics on the one side with research in leadership and behavior on the other. Although this position would have been strengthened with the use of statistics, it is well known that spirituality and religion continue to underpin many ethical frameworks in both the public and private sector.
The author also goes against the typical postmodern grain of relativizing everything in favor of a frank and earnest discussion of universal ethics and morals. There are global crises, problems that indeed can be traced to religious extremism. Apologetics do not solve problems but only contributes to the proliferation of violence. These are also problems that cannot be solved without drawing attention to their spiritual nature. It is possible to condemn religious extremism without simultaneously isolating or censuring those who cultivate and apply genuine spiritual ethics to their personal, business, or political decisions.

One of the central tenets of Frunza’s article relates to the leadership vacuum in spiritual communities.
