¶ … Dr. Dole Queue It might seem that having too much education, like being too rich or too thin, is impossible to achieve. However, according to Adrian Wooldridge's article "Doctor Dole Queue," that is precisely what is happening to a generation of PhD students. After a certain point, there is a diminishing level of returns for the student in regards to getting degree after degree. And certain degrees, such as a PhD in English literature, can actually make the job-seeker less employable, given the lack of utility of the degree in fields outside of academia and the opportunity cost of time and money to get a PhD. Wooldridge primarily uses facts and statistics to illustrate his point, underlining the discrepancy that exists between the claim that 'more education is good' versus the reality that exists...
Wooldridge counters the argument that 'more education is better' by taking it to its logical, absurd conclusion through the use of examples and illustrations: he states eventually PhDs will be touted as mandatory for all students in post-industrial economies, just like secondary education is considered the minimal education standard for entering the workplace. The absurdity of this vision underlines a serious point he is making, namely the uselessness of a PhD for the majority of the degree's current recipients.Naylor, PhD,, Dorothy A. Brooten, PhD, Roberta L. Campbell, PhD, Greg Maislin, MS, MA, Kathleen M. McCauley, PhD, and J. Sanford Schwartz, MD. All of the authors have graduate or post graduate degrees in the fields of health or medicine. This therefore makes them all qualified to write on the proposed study, and to carry out the research. They are, therefore, reliable and credible researchers in this field. The title of
Most recently I accepted a contract position with an online college as a Subject Matter Expert for the design of a new Linux Administration course intended for the online environment. Being a teacher has, although not strictly part of my academic resume, proved to be an education in and of itself, as I am always learning from my students. Teaching students at different junctures of their academic careers will
Once this takes place, you have a situation that is similar to the time frame before World War I. Where, all of the different world powers assumed that they understood the rationale and actions of each other. At which point, a small regional conflict in Serbia would escalate in a major conflict that would engulf all of the major world powers. (Steward 2003, pp. 6 -- 20) This is
As Epstein suggested earlier, there seems to be no downside to this process. James Colliver (2000) would disagree. He dismisses the assertions that favor the efficacy of PBL; his misgivings parallel Hmelo-Smith's earlier remarks. For instance, Colliver contends that the popularity of PBL is predicated on a kind of mass enthusiasm rather than empirically based scientific evidence (p.259). Colliver asserts that PBL has not proven valid and lacks confirmation as successful
Other determining factors influencing long-term affects of abuse to a child include: Whether the child's mother is supportive and child can confide in her. Whether the child's experiences success at school Whether the child has nurturing relationships with peers. (Ibid.) Childhood intimacy problems and sexual abuse, interacting with family background, contribute the child's developing self-esteem and sense or "world" mastery being disrupted. These deficits, in turn, increase the probability of a child experiencing
Nursing shortage is a problem in many countries. It is often difficult to get trained nurses. While nurses are an integral part of the health care system, a shortage of trained nurses leaves an impact on the health care system. Due to the shortage of nurses there is often a heavy workload on the serving nurses. One of the major concerns about the shortage of nurses and the consequent workload on serving
