Problem Statements and Drafts of Goals
Rachel's working hours are taking a toll on her. She is not able to get home in time to check up on the progress of her children. Her work pays poorly at $11 per hour and this does not allow her to have health insurance as the premiums are costly for her. Goal: Obtain greater pay.
Calvin's mannerisms and conducts are worrying. He seems to be losing interest in school yet he is in the 8th grade. There is concern that he might follow the same actions that were undertaken by his older sister Alyssa who dropped out of school at the age of 16 years. Calvin is also involved with bad friends who use foul language. In addition, his last report from school indicated that he was failing. Owing to Rachel's busy schedule, she has not obtained information on his progress from school. Goal: Take more time to assess Calvin's behavior and progress.
Alyssa is 12 weeks pregnant. The main concern is that she will not be able to take care of the infant with such minimal pay. Her boyfriend, Bobby, seems to be cheating on her and due to the baby, she will be forced to move out. Goal: Provide advice to Alyssa on what she needs to do.
4. Rachel and her children live in a 2-bedroom duplex. She is forced to sleep on the couch. This becomes more of a problem when James is around as there is no privacy and there is less space. In addition, James is not included in the lease and having him runs the risk of being kicked out. In addition, James jumps from job to job, has not kept a steady job for a while and at times is jobless. He is not reliable for childcare or even being a full-time parent. Goal: Make decision on whether to be with James or not.
5. Rachel wishes to obtain a degree, perhaps in Criminal Justice or Education. The key problem is that owing to the minimal pay from her job and her responsibilities of taking care of her children, she is unable to afford paying for the program by herself. Goal: Find a grant or scholarship...
generated from the problem statement. Like the problem statement, research questions should be stated clearly, refer to the relationship between two or more variables, and be researchable (Tuckman, 1999). For instance, suppose you are interested in examining predictors of success for doctoral students. As you begin your research, you find that there is a gap in the literature. This is an opportunity for a researchable problem. If there is
Deducing a Problem Statement and Purpose of Study Using a deductive, or top-down, approach requires that you move from a broad or general content area to a specific content area. In Week 3, you used a deductive approach to narrow a broad area of interest to a specific researchable dissertation topic. Now, you are asked to use a deductive approach to narrow your dissertation topic to a specific problem statement. Before you
In “Associations Between Gun Violence Exposure, Gang Associations, and Youth Aggression,” Forster, Grigsby, Unger, et al. (2015) use logical regression models on cross-sectional data from three middle schools in California to determine the associations between aggression, self-control, and gang affiliations. The Literature Checklist, the Litmus Test Guide, and the Problem Statement Checklist all provide frameworks for evaluating the reliability and validity of the Forster, Grigby, Unger, et al. (2015) research.
Causative Analysis There are several causes to why the students did not pass the state standardized test in mathematics and in language arts. It is strongly believe that the students were not adequately prepared for the test because they had not been completing the required assignments and attending the online classes offered by their teachers. Their lack of School Improvement 7 participation in the class, has lead them to a failing
Further, rather than "inviting" students to seek help, the systematic plan "requires" them to receive additional assistance until mastering the concepts. For example, at an Illinois school, the collaborative team determined that every three weeks, each student receives a progress report. Within the first month of school, new students learn that if they are not doing well, they will receive a wide array of immediate interventions. First, the teacher, counselor,
Schools are legally allowed to mandate uniforms for sports as well as protective gear. The ACLU notes that school administrators can make students "wear special stuff like the gym uniforms or goggles if they are needed to protect" them. Although schools cannot restrict hairstyles, certain they can ban certain types of clothing ranging from low-rise jeans that show panties to trench coats that might conceal weapons. The courts can
