Political Environment And Business Article Review

¶ … special curiosity about the ways in which politics and business mix. Businesses are beginning to learn how to use the political environment to help frame competition in their industries. The article illustrates how some powerful European shoemakers have used the political clout of the EU to defend their market positions against shoemakers with lower cost structures in China and Vietnam.

This paper informs what I have learned about the value of analyzing the external environment. I have learned that factors in the external environment can have a significant impact on business. I have also learned, however, that there are times when businesses can influence the external environment to create more favorable conditions.

The story of the anti-dumping duties has long-term implications for trade relations between the EU and these Asian nations. The battle for power in global trade is critical in shaping how we conduct our business, and has been for centuries. The balance of power is relative to the ability of trade blocs and nations to defend or encourage certain industries, and we can see how each side in this story is attempting to protect its economic interests.

To the general citizen, this story is relevant because it helps to explain the prices of shoes in Europe. If there is a shortage of cheap Asian footwear on the market, this story explains the cause. It also illustrates to the general consumer that they may face higher costs for many products if those products are subject to protectionist measures. It is not simply market forces which determine supply and demand.

The piece is well-written and well-documented. Multiple sources are used to provide a balanced perspective. The story illustrates the issue at hand and offers a reasonable explanation to the reader. The information is conveyed well, allowing the reader to form his or her own opinion about the issue by providing background knowledge and perspective from a number of industry personnel.
