Nursing Study Proposed Qualitative Research: The National Nursing Shortage

The healthcare industry has a significant challenge ahead of it and most evidence suggests that the severity of this challenge will only get worse if resolutions aren't soon implemented. Here, we refer to the national nursing shortage that deprives hospital patients of quality care, that overburdens nurses on duty and that generally detracts from the performance of a healthcare facility on the whole. Worse yet, evidence suggests that the continuing retirement of the baby boomer generation is increasing the patient population on a scale with which current nursing employment simply can't keep up. Indeed, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2012), "the United States Registered Nurse Workforce Report Card and Shortage Forecast" published in the January 2012 issue of the American Journal of Medical Quality, a shortage of registered nurses is projected to spread across the country between 2009 and 2030."

This is why we propose a research endeavor here aimed at better understanding the reasons that many hospitals are facing nursing shortages. Only by better understanding some of the perceived reasons for staffing shortages...

The qualitative study proposed here is intended to help better elucidate this subject for those who make hospital staffing decisions.
Qualitative Study:

The mode of study selected is a qualitative study. The reason for employing a qualitative study is that the subject matter in question would best be explored through verbal data of the 'thick description' variety. In the interests of producing a nuanced and discursive understanding of the reasons for staffing shortages, the data gathered will be open-ended in nature.

Summary:

To summarize the qualitative study here proposed, the method of data gathering would be the use of open-ended surveys. A case study approach would likely be the best starting point for surmising some of the reasons that a given hospital might be experiencing or projecting staffing shortages. Here, by interviewing subjects at every level of the hospital, from administrators and recruiters to nurses and nurse managers, we have the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of issues such as low morale, difficult working conditions, high levels of turnover or issues relating to filling new jobs.
