¶ … Nursing Course Project Milestone #1:PICOT & Literature Review Worksheet

PICOT Worksheet

To identify a problem or concern that nursing can change and select key words for a literature search.

Directions:Use the form below to complete the PICOT assignment in Milestone #1. This includes filling in the table with information about your research question and your PICO (T) elements, as well as answering the Search Technique questions.

Identify the Problem.The nurses have problem communicating with the patient and the doctors.

Identify a potential solution. There can be training and motivation programs for nurses to help them interact and communicate with patients with confidence.

Step 3:Create your research question.Why nurses lack confidence in communication with subjects i.e. The patients and their families and bosses i.e. The doctors dealing the case?

Step 4:Select the key PICOT terms for searching the evidence.The issue of developing communication confidence in nurses can be based on PICOT search terms:

P = Patient or Subject. In this case nurses dealing patients

I = Intervention is to motivate nurses using training or simple interactive sessions

C= Comparison of gains of presence and absence of confidence in communication

O = Outcome is better communication between patient, nurse and doctor

T = Time for intervention can be any time before the nurses are finally put in duty to serve patients.

Research question:

Why nurses lack confidence in communication with subjects i.e. The patients and their families and bosses i.e. The doctors dealing the case?

Focus of the question:

Improving nurses' communication confidence

PICO (T) Elements

P = Patients(s) or problem

Nurses

The nurses are the subject and 'patient' in this case since they have the problem in effective communication between doctors and patients. They have lack of confidence thus they often miss important parts of messages or misinterpret that may lead to disasters.

I = Intervention underConsideration

The nurses need to...

The motivation can be offered externally and even the nurses can self-motivate themselves identifying their problems and knowing the need for communicating better so that communication errors are overcome.
C = Comparison

Currently the nurses are only trained for medical and nursing practices. Once their education completes, they are sent to the health care and nursing centers to serve. They are not offered any communication programs in detail that besides telling, help them practice effective communication. The nurse's motivation for better and confident communication is expected to have many impacts on reducing number of nursing errors, miscommunication, developing trust between nurses, patient and doctors.

O = Outcome

The intervention i.e. external and internal motivation programs will make the nurses confident and they will not doubt their talent, listening skills and worth in serving patients.

T = Time

Time is money. It is better to train nurses on confident communication before they enter the practice since it becomes harder to do it afterwards. However, if not trained before, as soon as possible rule should be used.

Search Techniques:

1. What three database(s) in the CCN library best address your research question (CINAHL, Cochrane, Medline, ERIC, (others; i.e. what subject heading would you use to perform your search)?

The nursing databases in CCN library that I found helpful are Academic OneFile, Academic Search Complete and Nursing and Allied Health Collection. Academic OneFile offers above 13,000 titles, of which 7,300 are peer-reviewed journals and. These references offer vast coverage of the medicine, social sciences, the arts, literature etc. And thus it interested me to find references regarding nursing communication in segments of social science and medicine. Academic Search Complete isbroad scholarly, multi-disciplinary database, offering 6,100 full-text periodicals, and since it covers broad range of disciplines I hope to find nursing issues articles in there.Nursing and Allied Health Collection has 400 titles, and offers work of professionals working in the field and students in nursing-focused curriculum.…
