New Earth, Chapter 10: A Journal

He makes it clear that ego and awareness are incompatible, like ego presents a barrier to awareness by helping the person see what he wants to see, rather than what is. However, once the person becomes aware, that awareness helps the person make better choices. Living in the now, rather than the past or the future, is critical to clarity and awareness. Tolle is not suggesting that a person not plan for the future at all, but consistently reinforces the idea that personal power is located in the present, because the state of being in which someone forms goals is critical to the achievement of those goals. Tolle becomes very metaphysical when discussing that idea, suggesting that the universe will align with personal goals when a person is aligned with his own inner purpose.

Tolle then discusses how the individual person's individual awareness can impact the world. First, he suggests that awareness...

A person really has the choice to accept what he is doing or to stop doing it. In other words, if a behavior is something that a person cannot accept, then it is something that the person should not be doing. That creates conflict, which helps contribute to suffering. All of this circles back to Tolle's message in the beginning of the chapter, which is that it is how people do things that determine whether or not a person is living his destiny. Furthermore, when people are doing things in a way that brings them enjoyment, rather than fulfilling a want, that brings joy, which is the creative power of the universe interacting with a person.
