PART 2-Historical Event
A specific historical event which has added to our understanding of certain aspects of the natural world is represented by the Chernobyl disaster. Which occurred in 1986. "The accident caused the largest uncontrolled radioactive release into the environment ever recorded for any civilian operation, and large quantities of radioactive substances were released into the air for about 10 days." (www.world-nuclear.org) in the period in which the accident took place, many countries were undergoing development processes. The international trend included an increased trust in the use of science and technology. Locally, while the importance of the central was understood, the same thing could not be stated about the risks it involved. It is believed that the accident was caused due to the lack of proper preparation of the workers.
The consequences of the explosion included the death of thirty workers and the contamination with thyroid cancer of many other people, especially children. The people who lived in the plant area were evacuated, although some of them returned to live there. People learned that in the absence of proper management of technology and substances, they can turn against us. The most important aspects which humanity has learned from the Chernobyl disaster were the environmental effects and the occurrence of cancer.
The first example refers to the contamination of the environment. It is safe to assert that people did not have a complete comprehension of the extent to which the accident had negatively impacted the surrounding environment. They knew however that the soil was contaminated and they consequently...
Science Education My view of science tends to be a typical Western one, where previous scientific knowledge is used to build new scientific knowledge. In addition to the component of observation, research is used to determine a theoretical background before new scientific knowledge is built upon this basis. When considering the indigenous perspective, one interesting thing to take into account is that this perspective does not necessarily need to clash with the
Science and Religion: Conflict Historical and Psychological Reasons for the Conflict Between Science and Religion There is obvious controversy on the tensions between science and religion. A growing number of well-known figures deny any logical conflict between science and religion. For example, Langdon Gilkey says the following: [T]o say that evolution' excludes God' is [. . .] merely to say that it is a theory within natural science. It is not to say
Perhaps the essential myth of all those that exist is that of the cosmogony, or the birth of the universe. This myth has taken incredibly many forms in the course of history, but it should be noticed that all of these forms postulate the existence of a divine will behind the creation of the world, be it a single God as in Christian doctrine or many divinities as in
For science it seemed illogical that the man was created in one day, copying the image of a being that supposedly has no face or body, and therefore, no image to create alike. The man is too strongly related to other animals as to be completely foreign to the other species. He has to be part of a group and live by the same rules that dominate the rest
The differences between the empirical inductivist approach to science and the Popperian one are immense. Based on induction, the former approach is thesis to Popper's antithesis. The Popperian approach is a response to and a rejection of the value of induction in the scientific process. This rejection pits these two approaches against one another. In the end, while the empirical inductivist approach does have some value and has a long
Of course there exist different concepts of anti-modernism, which state that scientific revolution and modernism lead the society to the moral and spiritual decline. But their appeal to refuse from the achievements of scientific progress sounds absurd or as a regressive religious appeal of fundamentalists, who want to contradict natural matter of facts, set by the dynamic laws of nature. Making a conclusion it's important to say that scientific revolution
