Various data collection approaches are available to the researcher. Such data can take various forms, including journal records, transcripts, observations, letter writing, class plans, stories, pictures, among others (Moen, 2006).

The approaches are made use of across a broad span in the social sciences field. They are used in education, crime, health among others. They are also the main resource when conducting ethnographic-based research in all fields. Narrative data has been used for long to decipher the needs of users in HCI research fraternity (Golsteijn & Wright, 2013).
