Technological changes or the changes in the marketplace have also made unions to merge or become obsolete. According to Sloane and Witney (2010)
unions that are faced with technological changes and are on the verge of becoming obsolete have merged with other unions in order to die respectfully. A good example is the Cigar Makers which merged its 2,500 members with the Retail Wholesale, and Department Store Union. The merger was done because the Cigar Makers union had been faced with changes in the marketplace that it could no longer manage.
Growth of the managerial conglomerate is another reason why unions have merged. For example, The Tobacco Workers, Bakery and Confectionery Workers merger was inevitable. This merger was triggered by the desire to increase the bargaining power of employees. The employers had increased their boundaries, which meant they had interests in different non-homogeneous industries. Employers who have a strong bargaining power, and have interests in diverse industries might lose site of the employees, and the unions need to strengthen the employees bargaining power through mergers.
The third reason is the consolidation in a sector or industry Holley, Jennings, & Wolters, 2011.
This would lead to merging of unions as the sector or industry would have merged into one entity, which makes the two unions redundant. Merging of the unions would also ensure that employees are well represented in the consolidated industry. For example, the Newspaper Guild merged with the Communications Workers of America after employers in the entire communication sector started merging. The Newspaper Guild benefitted most out of the merger as it now had experienced bargaining professionals.
