Math and Excel
I agree that having a solid math foundation can be beneficial when using Microsoft Excel. I would think that, yes, if you want to be really proficient in Excel you should know some math. First of all, Excel relies heavily on mathematical formulas and functions (like SUM, AVERAGE, IF, VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, etc.). If you have a good math foundation you will be able to grasp these functions fairly easily because you will understand what they do. Not any kind of math, thoughspecifically, I would say a foundation in statistics is what would be preferred. Statistical functions like AVERAGE, STDEV, and VAR are going to make a lot more sense if you already have knowledge of basic statistics. And then basic computer logic skills would help, too, because logic functions like IF, AND, OR rely on understanding Boolean logic and conditional expressions.
Second, Excel is often used for data analysis and reporting. A math background is going to help people understand and interpret trends in data, see and understand the relationships between variables, and grasp the value of charts and graphs (although this is not necessarily an extension of a math foundation). However, more advanced Excel functions like array formulas and pivot tables will require mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.
I would also say that, yes, a person who is not efficient in math can still become proficient in Excel. Basically, Excel itself can be a way to learn mathematical skills. So even if you dont know a lot of math going in, you can build math skills along the way. Plus, Excel has a lot of built-in functions that automate calculations. People can calculate percentages and perform basic statistics with minimal math knowledge. Finally, not all uses of Excel involve complex mathematics. Many people use Excel just to organize data, which doesnt really require any deep mathematical expertise at all.
