When the paramedics arrive, they must be able to determine if the individual is allergic to specific drugs and what amounts. This will help in establishing possible IVs that will be given to the patient on the way to the hospital and their possible reaction to specific medication. During this process, is when paramedics must be able to use Algebra in determining how much of a particular substance should be given to the patient. At the same time, they have to be able to rapidly convert between decimals and fractions. This is indicating how they have to make calculations between the English and Metric systems. These actions will have a dramatic impact on the ability of paramedics to be able to stabilize patients on the way to the hospital. This will determine if the person is able to survive the incident (based upon the calculations and observations of paramedics). (Monteclavo, 2011) These elements are showing how both career fields will use Algebra and the Metric system to determine the amount of assistance that is needed. In the case of firefighters, this is based on: evaluating the reaction of the fire and how much of a particular resource is necessary. While paramedics, will use both areas to covert between the English and Metric systems. At the same time, they will use Algebra to decide the amounts of medication that are required for stabilizing the patient (which increases their chances of survival). (Monteclavo, 2011)

This is because both jobs involve using substances that have to react to specific situations. In the case of firefighters, this will occur during the course of deciding the best way to fight a blaze. These calculations will assist in placing specific amounts of resources where they will be most effective. (Monteclavo, 2011)
While paramedics, will use these two areas to decide how much medication a patient needs to receive and their possible reaction. This means that they have to switch between the English and the Metric systems on a regular basis (which requires doing these kinds of calculations in their head). These areas are important, because they are illustrating the role that Algebra and the Metrics system are playing in: protecting the lives of patients, preventing property damage and ensuring that crews are able to conduct their jobs effectively. This is when they can have a positive impact in reducing the severity of the situation (based upon these calculations). (Monteclavo, 2011)
