Managing Time As An Adult Learner There Essay

Managing Time as an Adult Learner There might not be a better decision than going back to school as an adult. This is particularly because one has the opportunity of enhancing their career and accomplishing their lifelong goals. The choice of going back to school as an adult is thus an easy decision. Despite the fact that reaching this decision is easy, following through the decision is the most difficult part. Difficult. This is because of the challenges that adult learners face in their day-to-day lives as students. The challenges they face range from work to schooling to ensuring that the have adequate time available in their day for their family and friends. Finding the time to ensure that adult learner's educational dreams are realized can be quite an enormous challenge. The adult learners feel that they can not support their family while working and attending classes every day. This is a challenge as they find it difficult to keep up with school as to get good grades to ensure that they progress (William, 2003).

Time management is therefore the greatest challenge for these adult learners. They often do not have enough time to attend to each and every area they are needed in. They neglect their responsibilities not because they do not want to do them but because they are not in a position due to time constrains. Friends often do not understand why they are not able to do the same things with them before joining school. Their struggle life might also be strained as a result of attending school. These challenges make it difficult for an adult learner to cope with their state of being a student, a mother or a father, a worker and a friend. Often it is an act of balancing so that they ensure they are not overworked, overstressed or overloaded in their everyday lives. Adult learners in most cases drop out of school since they are not able to keep up the long working hours coupled with a lot of schoolwork. However there are those who do not drop out and instead choose to push through. They continue working and attending school because they choose to approach the situation with positivity. They come up with ways...

A successful adult learner is one who is able to manage this most crucial resource which is time. There are various time management strategies that can enable adult learners get enough time for their work, school and family.
Prioritize work

As an adult learner one is expected to be aware of their priorities. They should make a list of the activities they are expected to do or even those they are expected to delegate. What is considered as top priority should be marked against what is considered as low priority. These tasks should be numbered according to their priority as essential tasks are given a top number while those which can wait get lower positions. A list of priorities should be made and reconfigured each day as the need arises. If most important tasks are accomplished then one should reward themselves for the good performance. It is a common misconception that studying can only be done when a person has large chunks of time. Studying without interruption for many hours can only lead to lack of adequate concentration. Therefore one should ensure that they divide their time into blocks. Small blocks can then be used to complete minor tasks when studying. Large tasks should then be broken down into segments which can be achieved easily. When time is allocated for study one should ensure that they make most of the time. Schedules are important for each week and an entire semester. The plan for the week's activities should contain only short-term goals that should be achieved in a particular week (Douglas, 2010).

Real time

One should also ensure that they do a calculation of the real time that they have or which they can find to enable them complete their tasks. A day has 24 hours and not all of them can be used in studying. After time for eating, sleeping and other activities is removed there still time remaining known as real time which can be dedicated to studies.

Work time

The assessment of time and energy needed to complete a particular task is also necessary. There are some tasks which…
