Andragogy refers to the strategies used in adult learning. This learning strategy enables adult learners to incorporate experience into their studies thus improving adult studies. The concept of andragogy is becoming common in many nations thus referred to as a science that promoted adult understanding and supports education of adults in the long run. The concept is changing since its original use by Alexander Kapp in 1833 from adult education practice to an academic discipline that is different from pedagogy. In the 1950's, Malcolm Knowles contributed to the theory by arguing that adulthood begins when the individual believes himself to be an adult (Boudreau & Twigg, 2011).
Andragogy learning strategy have some advantages in there application to the learning environment. Unlike in pedagogy, there is an immense experience associated with andragogy. The educators can make use of this resource to ensure that the learning environment is improved. Adult learners have a control of the materials taught to them. The students have an understanding of the relevant material due to their experience. Participation is improved in an adult learning environment; the educators also encourage this form of participation to enable the students to learn from one another. The adults can directly see the use of the new information learned in the classroom environment in real life situations.
