Food insecurity tends to exclude some demographic group from the same level that exists for other groups which can be conceptualized as existing along a continuum ranging from transitory insecurity to chronic food insecurity (Concepts of food security, 2016). This continuum is comprised of four main dimensions as follows: (a) physical availability of food; (b) economic and physical access to food; (c) food utilization; and (d) stability of these dimensions over time (Concepts of food security, 2016). Therefore, the issue of the working poor and food insecurity can be evaluated in terms of these four dimensions and how they operate to exclude the working poor from these four dimensions compared to mainstream society. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reports that reducing food insecurity cannot be achieved by addressing the economic aspects alone but rather requires a multifaceted strategy that includes strategies for income growth as well direct nutrition interventions and increased investments in educational initiatives to improve food utilization practices (Concepts of food security, 2016). In this regard, the FAO emphasizes that, "Simply put, all hungry people are food insecure, but not all food insecure people are hungry, as there are other causes of food insecurity, including those due to poor intake of micro-nutrients" (Concepts of food security, 2016, p. 3). One leadership style that closely corresponds to this conceptual framework is the transformational leadership style described by Patti (2009) which has proven efficacy in effecting meaningful change in complex situations. Applying a transformational leadership style to the issue of the working poor and food insecurity is also consistent with Salamon's (2015) observation that the nonprofit sector has become more professionalized since the 1960s by implementing proven leadership strategies as well as Gill and Mathur's (2011) findings that transformational leadership can help empower the working poor.
