He is also an advocate of higher education reform, and believes that the curriculums of many American universities are ignoring some very important aspects of education. In his book, he continues, "Some universities are starting to build e-business into their business management curricula. But what about political science, ethics, or the law schools?" (Gerstner, 2002, p. 353). He supports changes in curriculum and more forward thinking areas of study, and believes ethics, especially the ethics of e-business and new technologies are largely being ignored by most schools.

Finally, Gerstner is a firm believer in a diverse and open workplace. At one point, he notes that when he took over in 1993, all of the highest leadership roles in the company were held by white men, but that changed during his tenure. Today, the senior executives include many nationalities and both genders, and its board of directors include men and women from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities. IBM is a global corporation, and as such, leadership and diversity throughout the country is a key not only to diversity in the workplace, but understanding and competitiveness around the world.

He is an ethical and enlightened leader who also supports education reform and restructuring, indicating his desire to make a difference in the lives of children around the world. He has been awarded numerous awards and accolades for his work in education. They include the "Cleveland E. Dodge Medal for Distinguished Service to Education - Teachers College, Columbia University, and the Distinguished Service to Science and Education award from the American Museum of Natural History" (Editors, 2003). He was also awarded the "designation of honorary Knight of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in June 2001" (Editors, 2003).
