Leadership And Management Over Time, The Terms Essay

Leadership and Management Over time, the terms management and leadership have been used interchangeably but in reality; these two terms are essentially different in regard to roles, characteristics as well as functions. In this text, I concern myself with a number of leadership and management issues I have studied so far and their application in enhancing my leadership capabilities.

Approaches to Leadership and Management

It is important to note that a number of issues dictate the leadership approach one would most likely adopt as a preferred style. In my case, these issues include but of course are not limited to the way I prefer making decisions, feedback mechanisms available as well as the tasks under consideration. With that said, I would consider adopting the directive approach. According to Nohria and Khurana (2010, pp. 18), in a directive approach, the leadership position is taken to be the basis of power. When it comes to decision making in this case, I would be solely responsible for the final decision after a comprehensive evaluation of facts. In my opinion, the directive approach is superior to other approaches including nurturing, encouraging as well as empowering as those responsible...

The leader in this case also has a significant influence on outcomes.
Management / Supervisor Skills: Personal Strengths and Weaknesses

It is important to note that there are a wide range of management / supervisor skills which can be developed as well as learnt. It is also equally important to note that that while I happen to have distinct management as well as supervisor skills, I could be lacking on some aspects of the same. Some of my main strengths as far as management is concerned include efficient time management skills, ability to delegate tasks while ensuring that efficiency is maintained and lastly; effective communication skills.

My main weaknesses as far as management and supervision skills are concerned lie in my inability to be patient as well as some deficiencies as far as effective planning is concerned. However, as I shall demonstrate in the next section, being aware of my weaknesses in regard to management as well supervision skills could go a long way to enhance the improvement of the same.
