The Jones Act

The Jones Act has gained much relevance to the U.S. domestic and national transportation and logistics than before. A close diagnosis of the industry reveals that the Act has served the interest of Americans because it provided set of sealift vessels, a knowledgeable and experienced workforce, and a base of shipbuilding industry, which is being used to protect the security of U.S. economy and military. Since its implementation, the U.S. navy has experienced a persistent shrink as it suffers from increased tear and wear leading to an increase in financial pressures as cheap foreign labor remains a challenge to the workforce. Therefore, it is evident that the Jones Act has made significant contributions to the U.S. national security (McCullough, 2010).

Cargo Preference Act of 1904

Since the Cargo Preference Act of 1904 was ratified, global ocean cargo has increased. A high percentage of the dramatic rise has been privately owned hence not subjected to cargo preference Acts. This has resulted in non-costly foreign flag vessels....

This has made the amount of ocean-based international cargo shipped on foreign vessels rise by ninety-eight percent after the implementation of the Act. Because of the increased percentage of U.S. flag vessels, it is clear that the Cargo Preference Act of 1904 has fostered developments in the American marine industry. Most U.S. vessels have entered the international arena engaging in the international trade at a lower cost. Without the Act, it would be impossible for most U.S. vessels to compete. This would force them to abandon their operations from the industry. Surveys indicate that approximately 115 vessels out of 170 vessels are involved in global trade (United States, 2009).
