Jennifer Su, an Atlanta pediatrician who was not involved the study saying starting infants on solid foods before 4 months can lead to allergies and eczema. The study was more thorough in reporting benefits of prolonged breast feeding as a reduction in the risk of respiratory and ear infections, diarrhea, diabetes, obesity, and sudden infant death syndrome, diabetes, obesity, eczema, and celiac disease. In trying to determine why mother's introduce solid foods early to infants the summary fairly accurately reports the study's findings that 90% of mothers report they thought their baby was old enough to start eating solid foods, 71% said there baby seemed to be hungry a lot of the time, and 55% believed their doctor or another health care professional said their baby should start eating solid foods. The study reported more detailed information including that 8.5% said my baby had a medical condition that might be helped by eating...

Furthermore, the study delved into other reasons mother might introduce their babies to solid foods too early such as an inability to recognize the signs of hunger, and a desire to prolong babies sleep patterns so as to get more rest themselves.
The summary reported that mothers who formula fed their babies were about twice as likely to introduce solid foods too early as mothers formula fed their infants. Additionally, there the study indicated a need for further training of obstetricians on infant feeding practices, reporting that 40% felt their knowledge on the matter was inadequate.
