As unique as ones fingerprint is, so is their heritage in some cultures. Everyone has their own unique heritage and this heritage is very different from the heritage of another culture, a person's heritage is what determines their religious, cultural and ethnic background. It is also what deals with the person's mental, physical and their spiritual beliefs and this will be used when maintaining the person's health, protecting and restoring their health. It is important to note that in the healthcare field knowledge of a person's heritage is very important as it helps the providers to understand how the person has been brought up their traditions and if they have used any traditional health approaches in the maintenance of their health status. These heritage assessments would also help people to remember things that occurred in their childhood.

The heritage assessment tool will assist individuals to understand their cultures, beliefs and traditions, heritage assessment is very important and it aims at understanding and building people's cultural competencies. It recognizes the diversity of people's cultures towards health care and also their linguistic. Culture, heritage, language and beliefs have a direct impact on the healthcare provider and the patient as this information would assist the healthcare provider to know how best to handle the patient's illness and also understand what is permissible in the patient's culture and beliefs.

Indians believe that wealth and health are related to one's body, mind and soul. There are certain illnesses that may never be reported especially mental cases, and this is due to the above belief. There are a variety of traditional medical systems found in the Indian culture including Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Acupressure and Acupuncture. Ayurveda is concerned with the well being of soul, mind and body, this is achieved through an established and daily routine of life it involves yoga and rejuvenating activities.
In the Indian culture most of them believe that herbal medicine is the best and would hasten a person's healing process Kasten, 1992.

India has modern and well equipped healthcare institutions both in the private and public sector, majority of the people in India are poor thus they and they do not have the capability of paying the high fees that are charged by the private or public healthcare institutions and this has forced them to rely heavily on their herbal medicines and they take them regularly as they understand it is better to prevent a disease than to cure it with continuous use of the herbs they are preventing more serious diseases. Indian men have more authority and power than women in the society and also family level, most Indians would not be comfortable been treated by a doctor who is of another sex (Male or Female).
