¶ … promote your health each day?
Preventative medicine is the key to personal health promotion. However, health promotion on a personal level is not about making grand, lifestyle changes overnight. Rather, health promotion is taking a series of simple, positive steps to ensure an individual's good health on a daily basis. A healthy daily life does not minimize the need for long-term care such as regular check-ups, but it can minimize the wear and tear of daily life and thus forestall the development of chronic conditions and the inevitable consequences of aging.
For example, waking up at the same time everyday, and not hitting the snooze alarm can contribute to a rejuvenating and restful night's sleep at the end of the day. Having a properly balanced breakfast of slow-burning carbohydrates such as cereal, mixed with a dairy protein also ensures good health and a source of energy throughout the morning. Regular brushing and flossing minimizes tooth decay and infection and prevents cavities. Morning exercise such as walking to work, or incorporating regular walking throughout one's day by utilizing the stairs more than elevators is both energizing and stress reducing.
Stress reduction and control is very important to good health. While one's occupation and studies give one a profound source of satisfaction, the pressures of modern life can be wearing -- thus taking time to have a quick, healthy lunch with friends or enjoying going to the gym after work, or simply playing with a child, relative, or friend after one's day is a joyful and important source of mental health promotion.
Of course, not every day proceeds so smoothly. But when a crisis comes about, it is important to be able to manage it through positive thinking and positive actions, rather than resorting to unhealthy techniques of stress management, such as lashing out at one's colleagues or loved ones. At the end of every day, ideally, one should say, I have had a productive day, and a healthy day that enriched the lives of my colleagues and loved ones, as well as myself. Having a sense of moving forward and meeting a life goal is important too, and through continuing education and meeting different physical, vocational, and personal goals, a sense of forward movement contributes to health, as well as a healthy attitude of enjoying the present.
Health promotion, disease prevention, and health maintenance are related terms that all pertain to public health. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2011) defines health promotion as "the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behaviour towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions." Promoting health involves marketing and publicizing information that can help individual consumers, communities,
Health Promotion Lesson Plan The concept of health promotion is thought of as "the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health" (Dunphy et al., 2011, p 25). Serious heart conditions can be prevented, which is why it is so important to utilize community education techniques in order to help try to warn community members of the complications before they occur. This
Health Promotion: The three levels of prevention in health promotion in nursing practice are primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. The process of prevention in nursing practice is made up of preventing diseases, curing them, and restricting their progression. These three levels of prevention work towards health promotion, which is described as the combination of academic and environmental support for living conditions and actions that contribute to the well-being of an individual
Healthcare Administration and Leadership Health care in the United States has progressed and improved to the point at which providers in all health care settings have defined and developed at least 4 major areas of importance for effective health care. Nurses, who have first hand knowledge and understanding of how to live healthy and how to take proper care of themselves, are far better equipped to teach others about these concepts. Certain populations can benefit greatly from prevention, especially those who are prone to specific types of diseases or conditions. One of the most common behaviors that leads to many chronic and often very damaging health conditions is smoking. Smoking
Health Promotion is one of the most challenging areas in today's nursing environment. Today, encouraging individuals to make personal changes in health promotion is often built on the concept of enabling individuals to improve their own health. Theorists like Dorothea Orem and Nola J. Pender have contributed greatly to our understanding of self-care and its impact on health promotion. Specifically, Orem's self-care theories outline the importance of understanding an individual's
