Health Literacy And Glycemic Control Research Proposal

As the study is intended to be cross-sectional, a sample of size 200 will be taken from this study population. Study Instruments

Health literacy will be evaluated using the Newest Vital Sign (NVS), which is a questionnaire available in both English and Spanish. The questionnaire consists of six questions which measure the ability of the individual to read and apply information taken from a nutritional label found on food and beverage items. The instrument has been approved by Pfizer.

In addition, glycemic control will also be measured by evaluating hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. This is a protein in the blood which increases when poor glycemic control occurs, and therefore provides a valid measure of this element of the study. This measurement will be taken from patient charts once they have given prior consent for the data to be collected and used. For the purposes of this study, poor glycemic control will be defined as having occurred in those will HbA1c levels of 7.1 or greater. Those with HbA1c levels of 7 or less will be classified as having good glycemic control.

In addition, when considering the actual HbA1c level itself, correlation of the two factors will be assessed through measures of covariance such as ANOVA. This is designed to test whether variation in levels of health literacy may account for variation in levels of glycemic control (Scott & Mazhindu, 2005).
