Some Good Advice from the Future

Looking back at the journey, I would like to think that I would do some things differently, but throughout my coursework, I have been fully committed to successfully completing my lifelong ambition to become a DNP graduate. Indeed, without this unwavering commitment, my plans for the future might have been derailed at multiple points in my academic career as work-life-school balances intensified. This challenge, combined with the ordinary rigors of daily life in the early 21st century have made the journey difficult but enormously rewarding. In truth, though, the journey could have been better, smoother and potentially even more educational and rewarding if I had the opportunity to read the following guidance beforehand.

Reflecting on my experiences, I would advise new DNP students including myself -- to embrace their commitment fully, as it will serve as an anchor during challenging times. In other words, keep your eyes on the prize. Certainly, it is vitally important to stay healthy as you balance work-life-school commitments, so effective time management is also crucial for success. Practicing self-care is not just beneficial but absolutely essential for sustaining the energy and focus required for DNP coursework. Ensure that you make time for regular exercise, adequate sleep, and activities that also bring you joy and relaxation. Remember: The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

In addition, building a strong support network of cohort members, mentors, and family can provide invaluable emotional and academic support throughout the DNP program (Durham et al., 2023). Getting enough sleep, eating the right foods, maintaining top-notch personal hygiene and socializing are essential to success, but the outcome depends on more than just good mental and physical health, but knowing when to ask for help when it is needed the most.

In fact, this is one area I neglected somewhat, and I was always reluctant to admit I needed help since I wanted to succeed on my own and my strong sense of self-efficacy convinced me I could if I tried sufficiently hard enough. While I managed to persevere, an honest current self-assessment convinces me that the path would have been easier, and perhaps more rewarding and even educational, if I had sought out more assistance early on in my DNP academic pursuits (Dunlap et al., 2023). A path not taken mindset, however, will not change the past but this change in thinking will help me in the future as I encounter new professional and personal challenges that might derail my career without assistance.

Developing this type of growth mindset that allows people to admit to these types of needs is also an integral part of overcoming the intellectual and emotional challenges of a DNP program. In fact, my strong sense of self-efficacy also discouraged me from accepting even meaningful and well-intentioned feedback and criticisms in an appropriate fashion. Indeed, I vividly recall rankling at the mere thought that I might actually need help instead of just buckling down and trying harder. Today and in the future --, rather than soldiering through these types of difficult and challenging situations and suffering for it as a result, I seek out assistance from a mentor or experienced DNP for guidance concerning my optimal path forward (Staffileno et al., 2019).

The commitment to advancing your education and practice will contribute significantly to the nursing profession and, ultimately, to improved patient outcomes and healthcare delivery. It is important to recognize that the DNP program is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about developing a new mindset and approach to healthcare. The program is designed to prepare individuals for leadership roles in clinical practice, healthcare administration, and policy-making. With this in mind, seek out new opportunities to apply your newfound learning in real-world settings.
