Life coaches can and should focus less on traditional problem solving and more on positivity and solutions. Focusing too much on the past and who was to blame and why can lead to bogging down and this can lead to failure (Schlundt-Bodien, 2011).
When it comes to a solution-based approach, there are a couple of assumptions that can and should be in place. First of all, there is not a huge need to analyze and diagnose problems to find solutions to the problem. Secondly, there should be a vivid description of the desired future and how the changes that lead to this future can be undertaken. Third, there is an assumption that the problem will fluctuate in intensity and scope. What worked in the past and what did not will be focused on as this is the best way to achieve success in the future.
