Five-Year Skills Development Plan: The Modern Working Essay

Five-Year Skills Development Plan: The modern working environment is characterized by limitless employment opportunities and minimal worker loyalty. As a result, today's workplace is an environment where organizations need employees more than employees' need for the business. The emergence of this difficult working environment has contributed to several challenges to both employers and businesses. Some of the major challenges employers encounter includes difficulties in finding skilled workers and the need for more employee motivation in order to promote workers' loyalty. The need for increased motivation in the workplace is associated with the need for businesses to recruit and retain skilled workers. Therefore, the major challenge in the modern workplace revolves around employee motivation due to its role in retaining good employees and managers.

Vision for My Career or Professional Life:

As a Human Resource Manager, I will develop new strategies and techniques that focus on improving motivation in the workplace to help retain good employees and managers in the organization. Today's businesses need to harness the total potential of every employee through motivating them for greater productivity. However, human resource managers and staff have primarily focused on recruiting, hiring, and training substitutes because of poor motivation in the workplace that promotes employee loyalty (Smith, n.d.). Consequently, businesses have been experiencing a high employee turnover, less loyalty, and less productivity.

While organizations incur huge expenses in replacing a typical worker, they do not realize the impact of high employee turnover on their bottom line. Therefore, the main issue or concern is how these organizations can avoid costs of high turnover, recruitment, and replacement of a typical worker. My vision as a human resource manager is to develop a strategy and tactic that businesses and organizations can use to deal with these challenges within the next five years.

Skills and Competencies Needed to Fulfill the Vision:

The realization of the vision of new strategies or techniques for motivation in the workplace is a process that is centered on effective management. As a result, one of the major skills required to fulfill this vision is management skills, which is basically the responsibility of the learner. This implies that the vision can be fulfilled...

Actually, managing people effectively requires the same skills that are necessary for a productive and successful life (Carlopio & Andrewartha, 2012). These management skills will be developed through learning management concepts and how to apply them in practice.
The fulfillment of this vision also requires leadership competencies that are crucial for survival in diverse situations and challenges in the workplace. Leadership competencies are crucial for this process because they provide a unique skills-based approach for modern challenges in management. These competencies will help in identifying an appropriate framework with effective behaviors towards the achievement of organizational goals in the present environment. Some of the most important topics covered in leadership competencies include mentoring/coaching, emotional intelligence, and life balance (Quinn, Faerman, Thompson & St. Clair, 2011).

Current Proficiency in these Skills and Competencies:

My five-year skills development plan started this semester through the nominated skill that is geared towards enhancing my professional career. The nominated skill this semester has helped me to acquire some skills and competencies regarding organizational strategies. These strategies include supervision and mentoring techniques, professional development opportunities, recognition and rewards programs, employee job redesign and enrichment, and workforce development initiatives ("Models of Workforce Development," 2007).

The semester is crucial towards my five-year skills development plan since it will enable me to harness necessary knowledge for desired direction and interest. The main focus is on career development, especially with regards to outlining and adapting individual goals and promoting vitality and professionalism in the career (Feinberg, n.d.).

Plan to Develop Complementary Skills:

The process of developing new strategies and techniques will involve a five-step learning approach that is customized for this area. As described by Carlopio & Andrewartha (2012), the five-step learning approach includes self-evaluation, learning, analysis, practice, and application. The self-evaluation will be carried out within the next 12 months and will involve examining the status and…
