Facilities Strategic Plan for a University: The development of facilities is a crucial part of constant health and well-being of an institution. This implies that every institution needs to have a comprehensive facilities strategic planning process. In light of these factors, I have been hired as a new facilities director at a local university to promote its ongoing health. The first task in this role would involve designing a new strategic plan for the institution's facilities. The institution has made significant investments on the construction and development of its classrooms and laboratory facilities. Currently, the university seeks to renovate current facilities to accommodate new teaching and learning methods as well as the increased use of technology. The facilities strategic plan would involve certain considerations including alignment with organizational needs, improvement of the learning environment, and recruitment of wide-ranging constituent support.

Alignment with Organizational Needs:

The approach towards the development of this strategic plan for the local state university is based on consideration of the institution as a single entity or unit. The plan would focus on combining the institution's finest attributes with a profound commitment to serve the public based on the history of the university. The university is renowned for some academic strength including academic excellence and a status of distinction among outstanding schools and colleges. Through treating the institution as a single entity or unit, the plan would focus on the university holistically instead of certain parts of subunits that make up the institution ("A Strategic Plan," n.d.). As a result, this strategic plan provides recommendations for institution-wide goals and initiatives that go beyond the university's administrative units. This is primarily because the link between the academic units and the administration of the institution should be based on continual dynamic exchange and growth in order to enhance the institution's health.

As previously mentioned, the development of this strategic plan is necessitated by the changing environment of the local state university. These changes that contribute to challenges and opportunities for this learning institution that promotes the need for improved institutional capacity. This objective of enhanced capacity within the institution can be achieved through a new facilities plan that provides strategic directions and actions. Generally, the plan would ensure the university has institution-wide strategies and techniques that enable it to meet the challenges effectively while capitalizing in opportunities for academic improvements.

Notably, the design of this facilities strategic plan is part of the university's initiatives towards preparing for a better future that is characterized with enhanced academic excellence and accomplishments. This preparation is fueled by re-evaluation of the institution's priorities and goals to determine whether current strategies and tactics promote the achievement of these goals. The plan identifies necessary strategies and initiatives that would be carried out within a five-year period to promote the realization of enhanced academic excellence. Some of the major goals and strategies to be carried out by the local state university within the next five years include & #8230;

Communication:

This is the first strategy towards enhanced academic excellence for the institution is communication through which the university seeks to provide consistent, timely, and meaningful communication in every direction. In this case, the institution will enhance internal and external communication structures through redefining tools used to accomplish this purpose ("Facilities Management," n.d.). During this process, the university will identify tools and structures that promote efficient and effective communication throughout the organization. Notably, these tools should provide suitable information and messages to different administrative units and individuals in the university in a clear, precise, accurate, and readily available way. From an internal collaborative perspective, this learning institution will ensure that monthly staff meetings are carried out in all work units to review monthly news reports. This will be accompanied by selection of important news items to be transmitted to all employees by the management team.

Customer Focus:

In addition to management of costs through exploring various cost reduction measures, the institution will adopt other measures towards enhancing customer focus. In this case, the university will strive towards providing excellent customer service to all students and colleagues on its campus. This would be achieved by seeking to understand and meet customers' needs through provision of clear information and excellent service. Moreover, the local state university will execute enhanced customer service training to all levels of staff across the departmental and administrative units.

Staff Development:

Staff development initiatives within the next five years would focus on developing and retaining a highly skilled professional and motivated working group across the institution's administrative and departmental units. The university will improve its emphasis on employee development while increasing opportunities for staff training and development....

This will be accompanied by actions that improve the significance of teamwork, leadership, and diversity in order to enhance morale in the workforce.
Staff retention initiatives would include various methods of recognizing outstanding performance and commitment to the organization. In addition, programs that promotes a working environment that is based on respect and trust will be created ("Facilities Planning and Management," 2011). The management team will ensure that work processes and practices that improve consistency are developed and utilized in every work unit.

Information Systems:

In light of the technological advancements that are transforming the education sector, the university recognizes the impact and significance of technology in promoting enhanced academic excellence and achievement. Therefore, the organization seeks to use existing technology to improve its modes of teaching and learning. This will involve developing an integrated, seamless, and modernized working environment that enhances operational effectiveness through the use of technology.

Culture Change:

The final strategic goal and initiative to promote the realization of enhanced academic excellence at the local state university is organizational culture change. This will be achieved through identifying major services and a means for gauging service commitment performance. The other part of the process is to encourage interactions and meetings between staff who embrace an attitude caring, supporting, and mentoring each other. The main reason for institutional culture change is to reliability, safety, and sustainability of all strategic initiatives and goals in the university.

Enhancement of the Learning Environment:

The enhancement of the university's learning environment would require increased commitment to the identified strategic goals and actions. The need for increased commitment to this process by all administrative and academic units is because of the usual difficulties attributed to finding time to devote to strategic planning. The improvement of the learning environment would require the facility managers to be more proactive by prioritizing important initiatives to achieve maximum effectiveness ("Strategic Facility Planning," 2009).

The implementation of the strategic facility plan to enhance the learning environment would involve the creation of specific projects to execute the new structures to meet institutional need. Based on the strategic goals and actions, enhancement of the learning environment would involve faculty renewal with regards to academic priorities. This will be followed by identifying departments and fields that are relevant to the implementation of the strategies. Once these departments or units are identified, they will be provided with necessary tools and structures to ensure effective implementation, evaluation, and improvement of these strategic initiatives. Upon completion of the process, an organizational culture will be created to support the use of new modes of teaching and learning, especially through using technology.

The university will also enhance its infrastructure to support creativity and research among all students. The transformation of the institution's workforce will play a critical role in the process by ensuring an increasingly diverse staff base, faculty, and student body. Effective mechanisms for holding administrative and academic units accountable will be enhanced. The final measure towards enhancement of learning environment is creating strong links that improve academic opportunities for students. These educational opportunities will help improve the quality and stature of the university's academic fields or disciplines.

Recruitment of Wide-ranging Constituent Support:

The effectiveness of the facilities strategic plan for the local state university would require wide-ranging constituent support from the institution's academic and administrative units. One of the major players in this process is the facilities management staff because of the role they play in providing direction and coordinating resources and efforts that help the institution to meet its strategic goals and actions within the next five years ("Facilities Management Strategic Plan," 2009). Recruiting the support of facilities management staffs is mandatory because of their crucial role in identifying, creating, and implementing the strategic direction in line with organizational needs. However, the support of the other staffs across the academic and administrative units is important because the strategic plan is holistic. The implementation of these goals and actions will be conducted in the entire institution, which demonstrates the necessity of obtaining support from the entire university.

The recruitment process of wide-ranging constituent support will be based on three major elements i.e. trusting relationships, engagement, and collaboration and connection. Under trusting relationships, constituent support will be obtained through creating and strengthening an environment that focuses and values long-term, trusting relationships. These relationships will not only be across the institutional workforce but will also be based on common goals, mutual respect and trust, and commitment.
