If he smokes, then I am leaving him far enough behind that I can cross that damn without being shot. I head for the dam, there is no choice, because the drop zone is on the other side of that dam. I have miscalculated the assassin's speed, or his sheer determination, and there are shots bouncing around me as I zig-zag my way across the dam. I have miraculously cleared the open space and I am now hidden again by the thick vegetation of the woods. There has to be a way to turn the table on the assassin. I spot a heavy tree stump, uprooted, it has left a deep gouging hole in the earth. I run ahead a short distance, giving the assassin, who is clearly a tracker, something to occupy him. I carefully back-track, fold myself into the hole where the roots of the tree stump were once buried deep in the earth, and I pull the near rotted out stump over me, concealing myself. I wait, the hunted is now the...

I smell the scent of cigarette smoke - he does smoke! I see his feet as he passes to the right of the stump. As he moves beyond, I see him studying the tracks I have left for him, then he stops, has a second of puzzlement, then he turns quickly and I shoot him in the heart. He doesn't know what happened to him, but watches with a dying despair as I push the stump away and come out of the hole. He is still dangerous, even though his hand holding the pistol is hanging limp at his side. I shoot him again, and he crumples to the ground. This is war. "People kill and are killed in war," I silently reminded myself. I drag him back to the stump hole, dump his body in and place the stump over him. it's cold, his body won't be found until spring. I'm careful to obliterate all signs of what just happened. I'm heading for the pick-up site.

Although "peace" appears in the speech as often as "United Nations," I am arguing that "United Nations" is the more primary of the two terms here, having precedence over "peace" since I believe that Bush is asking his listeners to focus on the formal authority of the United Nations as the font from which peace can be coaxed. Focusing on peace as the primary term would (I believe) make the

Not all is lost in the mire of Collins' masturbatory research, though. Allies Won The opening line of historian Richard Overy's book Why the Allies Won is "why did the Allies win World War II?" It is a straightforward question, and yet one that is rarely posed with sufficient verve by scholars, students, or curious history buffs. That the Allies won is taken for granted due to the basic fact that history will be penned forever by the victors, or at least
