Leadership
The business leader that I have chosen is Elon Musk from Tesla. This company is attempting to become a major car manufacturer, using electric technology and with an eye to self-driving cars as well, leapfrogging the traditional gasoline car to become a disruptive technology in the industry. The company has modest earnings and a very high burn rate, and by all accounts Tesla is a demanding place to work as well. All of this implies that the company needs a strong leader in order to lay out a vision and have so many people, both inside and outside of the company, buy into that vision (D'Onofrio, 2015).
Pearce and Robinson (2014) point out that leaders are responsible for setting the organizational culture. The leader essentially sets the tone for the organisation, and the followers take their cues from the leader. Musk does this with Tesla, demanding that employees work long hours for less pay than comparable companies can offer, because of the mission that the company is on (D'Onofrio, 2015). As Pearce and Robinson (2014) point out, the leader's vision is "what the leader sees the company must become to establish and sustain global leadership" and Musk has provided clarity of vision and a sense of purpose...
Question 1 Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla and has been leading the company for the past decade. Musk has been credited with leading Tesla out of the niche electric vehicle (EV) market and into the mainstream global market, with plans to expand in China. Introduction The leader that I will analyze is Elon Musk, who runs a number of different companies. Musk makes an interesting case study for leadership principles in part because of the number of different companies he is trying to lead a the same time, but also because his companies
Problem Solving Elon Musk uses a systematic method of problem solving known as “first principles thinking,” which involves “creating new knowledge and solutions from scratch,” (Oshin, n.d., p. 1). First principles thinking allows for maximum creativity in the problem solving process. Furthermore, first principles thinking is solution-focused, encouraging Musk and leaders like him to push through seemingly insurmountable barriers. Elon Musk’s visionary style of leadership blends well with the first principles
