Roles and responsibilities of leadership and management in a hospital

Leadership is a process in which a person influences others socially so that they can support him or her to accomplish a task that is common to them. It is not compulsory for a leader to have formal authority for them to be able to organize people in the achievement of this common task. There are several theories that attempt to describe the concept of leadership. This refers to the behaviors that the leaders have. They include autocratic leadership, where the leader acts as a dictator. The leader makes all the decisions by him or herself and does not allow any decisions or advice from the subordinates. The democratic leadership style is where everybody has a say which can then be included into the final decision made. Laissez-faire style which is also called the free rein style is where the leader gives freedom to the subordinates. The subordinates are allowed to make their own methods and policies.

According to Nurse Patricia, there are several qualities that a nurse manager needs to have in order to discharge their duties with effectiveness and efficiency in the hospital. One is to respect other member of staff. The nurse manager needs to acknowledge that each member of staff is a professional and even though he or she is the overall supervisor, the subordinates need to feel they are respected. Secondly, the nurse manager needs the ability to set standards and to provide clear examples to the subordinates. The nurse manager also needs to be organized in their activities and to exercise creativity and flexibility. Organization makes sure that there are clear rules by which the members of staff conduct themselves including shifts, deadlines, milestones, etc. The nurse manager needs to make decisions efficiently and to be able to resolve any conflicts arising in their work station. The nurse manager also needs to motivate and empower their staff so that they feel valued and respected in the hospital. The nurse manager needs to be honest, fair and consistent in their decision making in order for the members of staff not to feel any kind of favoritism or discrimination.
