Dentistry
Coursework and DAT preparation offer exposure to the scientific principles and information underlying the general practice of dentistry but no number of teachers and tests can adequately prepare an individual for a professional career without the added bonus of first-hand experience. I have had the honor of working with esteemed Dr. Friedman and periodontist Dr. Ricardo and owe to them my first rigorous exposure to the day-to-day operation of a private practice. Shadowing a professional puts academic knowledge in perspective, revealing the more subtle aspects of the practice including patient care and office management. No dentist will succeed without the development of a collaborative team of assistants and support personnel, and also no dentist would remain in practice who did not earn a solid reputation. My observations of both Dr. Friedman and Dr. Ricardo revealed what successful professionals do to ensure their reputation within the community, among their colleagues, and with their professional peers.
Volunteering for over 150 hours in Dr. Friedman's office and 50 for Dr. Ricardo exposed me to several facets of the private practice including monitoring patient files and managing front-end duties including reception for new clients. I learned how the professional may attract new clients and retain existing ones to ensure the success of the practice. Moreover, I assisted with intake and with rear office duties as well, including but not limited to instrument care and radiology assistance.
