¶ … United States, medical pain control through the use of regional anesthetics such as epidural blocks or spinal anesthesia is the most popular from of child delivery (Childbirth). Doctors favor the epidural block because medication does not enter the mother's circulatory system, thus it does not cross the placenta and enter the bloodstream of the fetus. There are also many forms of non-medical pain control (Giving birth naturally: Techniques to use). For example, the Alexander Technique focuses on movement and breathing to increase the effectivness of pushing as the baby is delivered. The Bradley Method focuses on tuning into your body and positions to ease labor pains. Hypnosis attempts to induce relaxation while Lamaze uses distraction techniques during contractions to decrease the perception of pain. Water delivery involves giving birth in a warm tub of water to help a woman relax and to provide buoyancy to help illeviate discomfort and pressue.
After research the epidural block, this seems to be the most attractive method for child delivery. The mother is wide awake and mentally aware of the birth of the child (Epidural facts). However, pain relief varies with some women still feeling pressure during contractions or pushing. For this reason, combining the epidural with either the Alexander Technique or the Bradley Method would be useful for further reducing discomfort.
The largest risk associated with the epidural is a drop in the mother's blood pressue, but hospitals give mothers IV fluids prior to the administration of the epidural to reduce the chances of this happening. Infrequently, an epidural can lead to fetal distress, fetal malposition, increased risk of forceps or vacuum extraction, episiotomy, and in some studies, and increased risk of cesarean section. Given a low threshold for pain, the epidural still appears to be a viable option despite these risk factors.
