Current Events Current Even 1: Ohio School Shooting

On February 27th, 2012, a school shooting occurred in the state of Ohio. Tragically, three people were killed in the incident and another three students were injured. It was reported that seventeen-year-old T.J. Lane entered Chardon High School Monday morning and fired ten shots, hitting a total of six students (Tavernise 2012). Prosecutors stated that the suspect in the school shooting had confessed to police. Since the perpetrator was under the age of eighteen prosecutors in the case decided to sentence Lane as a juvenile. T.J. Lane was a sophomore at the high school where the shooting took place. This particular school is designed for children who are considered "at risk." Either they have gotten into trouble in more traditional school settings or something of that nature. Mr. Lane's father was arrested in 2002 for attempted murder and was sentenced to four years in jail of which he served nine months. Additionally, the father was forbidden to have contact with the younger Lane's mother because of domestic abuse...

It is very likely that the violent upbringing of the then-seven-year-old T.J. would have had an impact on the child's development. He would likely have experienced or at least witnessed some of the abuse and would have been aware of reason for his father's disappearance from the family setting. This is a tragic case on many levels, not the least of which is that it should have been obvious that with such a violent upbringing T.J. Lane was likely to commit some kind of violent action. It is unclear how much counseling Lane had following his father's arrest and incarceration or how much of the domestic abuse he was witness or victim of. Had social workers been more involved in the situation from the beginning, then perhaps this tragedy could have been avoided.
Current Event 2: Josh Powell Case

In February of 2012, a horrific event occurred in Graham, Washington. According to reports, a man named Josh Powell greeted a social worker at the door of his home, grabbed his two children, slammed and locked the door, and then proceeded to…
